On this week's episode of the Insider, rob will take a look at the Hanford City Council meeting coming up on Tuesday and we'll also take a look at this week's community calendar, including a preview of the big downtown Hanford car show being put on by the Carnegie Museum of Kings County this coming Saturday.

00:00:18.711 --> 00:00:22.763
This is the Hanford Insider for Monday, june 3rd.

00:00:45.259 --> 00:00:46.470
Welcome to this episode of the Hanford Insider podcast.

00:00:46.470 --> 00:00:46.996
I'm your host, rob Bentley.

00:00:46.996 --> 00:00:47.439
Thanks for listening.

00:00:47.439 --> 00:00:50.189
For those of you new to the show, welcome.

00:00:50.189 --> 00:00:54.551
The Hanford Insider is a weekly podcast that releases every Sunday afternoon.

00:00:54.551 --> 00:01:04.212
I cover a little bit of everything from Hanford news, a community calendar, and my son, eric, who works in sports, gives us a rundown of high school sports each week during the school year.

00:01:04.212 --> 00:01:08.049
I try to keep things light and positive in such a negative world.

00:01:08.049 --> 00:01:09.781
I hope you enjoy the format.

00:01:09.781 --> 00:01:12.528
I'm always looking for more human interest stories.

00:01:12.528 --> 00:01:14.171
A little bit more about that.

00:01:14.171 --> 00:01:16.765
Later in the show I'll let you know how you can get involved.

00:01:17.546 --> 00:01:22.123
I'd like to give a shout out to Terry Brousseau, kim Spicer and Mickey Stoddard for supporting the show.

00:01:22.123 --> 00:01:27.212
Their recent donations to Buy Me a Coffee helped me pay the cost of producing the show each week.

00:01:27.212 --> 00:01:29.915
Thanks, I really appreciate your kindness.

00:01:29.915 --> 00:01:35.212
The weather this week is going to be very warm, with temperatures in the 90s to low 100s.

00:01:35.212 --> 00:01:40.762
Be sure to hydrate and get plenty of rest, especially those of you attending graduations this week.

00:01:40.762 --> 00:01:48.888
I'd like to give a special shout out to all of the students and staff at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School for inviting me to speak at their career day last Friday.

00:01:48.888 --> 00:01:54.415
It was great to visit my alma mater and share the career path of a social media content creator.

00:01:54.415 --> 00:02:02.164
Speaking of content creators, I ran into Leo Gonzalez and he and I will be getting together soon for an interview to air here on the show.

00:02:02.164 --> 00:02:09.852
It was a great day and I really appreciate the professionalism of the school staff during the brief lockdown due to police activity in the area.

00:02:11.040 --> 00:02:15.111
In community news, the Hanford City Council will be meeting this week on Tuesday night.

00:02:15.111 --> 00:02:33.782
Items on the agenda include a badge-penning ceremony and oath of office for the promotion of Sergeant Raymond Diaz, sergeant Jared Cotta, corporal Edward Aguayo, corporal Troy Smith and Corporal Rolando Jaime Santiago Rodriguez is being appointed to the Parks and Recreation Commission.

00:02:33.782 --> 00:02:42.271
City staff will be seeking approval to name and dedicate the Freedom Park Playground in memory of former mayor and community organizer Dan Chin.

00:02:42.271 --> 00:02:49.649
The council will receive a notice of completion for the Civic Auditorium remodel and the building is now being booked for events.

00:02:49.649 --> 00:02:59.245
Finally, the council will interview and select one of seven applicants to fill the vacant council seat until a new council member is chosen by the voters in the November election.

00:02:59.245 --> 00:03:12.471
In Area B, the applicants are Aisha Samara, rose Rusty Brookshire, bernardo Merez, jack Schwartz Jr, martin Devine, nathan Odom and Rodney Garcia.

00:03:12.471 --> 00:03:17.907
You can watch the City Council meeting in person or online at hanfordcity.

00:03:17.907 --> 00:03:28.604
The City Council will meet again on June 11th to consider items related to the potential sales tax revenue measure to be put out to the voters for consideration in the November 5th election.

00:03:34.493 --> 00:03:36.622
Here are some things coming up on our community calendar.

00:03:36.622 --> 00:03:41.193
At the Thursday Night Marketplace this week it's Dairy Appreciation Day.

00:03:41.193 --> 00:03:44.301
The band Run for Cover will be providing the entertainment.

00:03:44.301 --> 00:03:50.806
The Kings Players are presenting A Penny for your Thoughts at the Temple Theater each weekend during the month of June.

00:03:50.806 --> 00:03:54.528
Visit kingsplayersorg for showtimes and tickets.

00:03:54.528 --> 00:04:00.072
I'll be grabbing events as I see them on the Hanford Sentinel calendar and social media pages.

00:04:00.072 --> 00:04:04.014
If you have an event coming up and you'd like some help getting the word out, let's work together.

00:04:04.014 --> 00:04:07.897
Send your information to hanfordinsider at gmailcom.

00:04:07.897 --> 00:04:22.300
Be sure to subscribe to my weekly newsletter to get a complete calendar of events.

00:04:22.300 --> 00:04:32.767
The third annual Carnegie Museum of Kings County Downtown Hanford Car Show is coming up on Saturday and I'd like to welcome to the show Mr Jack Schwartz, who's the president of the Carnegie Museum of Kings County, and Mike Quinn, who is a contributor on the committee.

00:04:32.767 --> 00:04:33.610
Welcome to the show, guys.

00:04:34.579 --> 00:04:35.384
Thank you for having us.

00:04:35.485 --> 00:04:39.750
Hello, it's good to be here and we appreciate the chance to talk about the show.

00:04:41.000 --> 00:04:42.321
So let's get right to it.

00:04:42.321 --> 00:04:43.701
Let's talk about this year's show.

00:04:43.701 --> 00:04:46.983
Jack, what can visitors expect at this year's show on Saturday?

00:04:47.004 --> 00:05:10.882
food vendors serving everything from snow cones and hot dogs to potatoes, to Asian food and anything in between.

00:05:10.882 --> 00:05:15.512
And finally, what's really exciting is in the park.

00:05:15.512 --> 00:05:25.134
We expect to have over 24 vendors who will be selling their crafts and jewelry, woodwork and selling their goods.

00:05:25.134 --> 00:05:33.230
I'd like to make a particular shout out to ChocoClean, who has stepped up and become a financial sponsor this year.

00:05:33.230 --> 00:05:37.644
They've always been a big supporter and this year they've gone an extra step and we appreciate it.

00:05:39.005 --> 00:05:49.464
So I know that the food truck situation is not necessarily trucks, but we actually have a food court area and it has a rather unique location.

00:05:49.464 --> 00:05:52.764
Can you tell us about the location of the food court Right?

00:05:52.925 --> 00:06:01.819
The food court is at the parking lot which is just to the east of the old courthouse in Bastille.

00:06:01.819 --> 00:06:06.055
It's on the northwest corner of 8th and Dowdy.

00:06:06.055 --> 00:06:14.119
It's a very intimate area and people like to congregate there and look at the different choices of foods.

00:06:15.165 --> 00:06:16.810
So, mike, let's get on to the main event.

00:06:16.810 --> 00:06:18.516
Let's hear about all these cars that are coming.

00:06:19.685 --> 00:06:20.971
Those are the stars of the show.

00:06:20.971 --> 00:06:31.819
We have so many really interesting cool cars that people have spent a lot of time investing money and effort in making these cars really beautiful.

00:06:31.819 --> 00:06:37.706
They've built up the engines, they've put fine paint jobs on them, they've invested in the interior.

00:06:37.706 --> 00:06:52.502
It's a sight for the eyes to come down and see, and the people who have done it are always very happy to talk to the spectators who walk around to look at the cars, explain what they've done to it, what they intend to do with it, why it's a cool car.

00:06:52.502 --> 00:06:57.557
That's some of the best part of having the car show is the stories that go along with the cars.

00:06:58.446 --> 00:07:01.295
So the cars are going to be laid out through downtown Hanford.

00:07:01.295 --> 00:07:05.456
What, specifically, what streets are going to be showcasing the cars this year?

00:07:06.245 --> 00:07:11.331
The main two streets are going to be Dowdy and 8th Street, so the show will be on the north end.

00:07:11.331 --> 00:07:17.077
It'll start at 9th Street and come on down south all the way down to including 8th Street.

00:07:17.077 --> 00:07:24.387
At 8th Street it tees off and will include from in front of the old courthouse all the way down to in front of the Carnegie Museum.

00:07:25.690 --> 00:07:31.387
So that's kind of what sets this show apart from others is the just the downtown aspect of it.

00:07:31.387 --> 00:07:44.860
You cannot beat the picturesque setting of the Civic Park and I know that we do a few things differently maybe than some other shows as far as the spacing of the cars and getting the cars in to their spots.

00:07:44.860 --> 00:07:45.970
Can you highlight some of those?

00:07:46.966 --> 00:07:57.997
Certainly You're 100% right about the beautiful setting, which is one of the things that when we talk to the exhibitors, they've been here before or they've heard about it and they really like downtown Hanford.

00:07:57.997 --> 00:08:01.093
What sets us apart is the way we set the cars up.

00:08:01.093 --> 00:08:06.377
We put them with a space of 15 feet between cars and we put them on a diagonal.

00:08:06.377 --> 00:08:16.396
What's nice is it allows for the owners of the cars to have a nice safe space around their cars so that way they don't have people crowding in so much when they want to see it.

00:08:16.396 --> 00:08:25.790
But it also leaves ample space for the people who come to look at the cars to see the whole car, not just the front of the car, but to look at it and see the lines.

00:08:25.790 --> 00:08:31.952
And what we found is that the people who come enjoy that and the people who are showing their cars really appreciate that.

00:08:32.975 --> 00:08:44.113
So, getting back to you, jack, I know that there's a definite format of the day, including judging and drive-in and when the cars are actually on display ready to go.

00:08:44.113 --> 00:08:50.697
Can you give us a general timeline of the day and maybe some of the types of cars divisions that you'll have?

00:08:51.644 --> 00:09:01.827
Sure, generally, the cars are starting to come in around 8 am and by 9 am we're pretty much ready for the public to see the cars.

00:09:01.827 --> 00:09:09.759
Judging and awards will go on around 1 pm and I would expect us to wrap up by about 2.30.

00:09:10.806 --> 00:09:13.695
So what are the categories that the cars will be judged in this year?

00:09:14.605 --> 00:09:29.029
Well, we obviously have best of show, best hot rod, best historic cars, which are cars from before 1950, best Historic Cars, which are cars from before 1950.

00:09:29.029 --> 00:09:31.135
Vintage Cars from 1951 to 1975.

00:09:31.135 --> 00:09:32.860
Modern Cars from 1976 to the present.

00:09:32.860 --> 00:09:34.004
This year we've also expanded our import categories.

00:09:34.004 --> 00:09:35.307
We have two different categories.

00:09:35.307 --> 00:09:45.725
We'll have the Best European Import Car and the Best Asian Import Car, and, of course, we can't do anything without having muscle cars, sports cars and trucks.

00:09:45.725 --> 00:09:59.307
One of the nice things which sets us apart in many respects is that we also have the People's Choice category, which allows people who come down to look at the cars to vote for their favorite car.

00:10:00.312 --> 00:10:05.230
So one of the nice things about the car show is it exposes more people to the Carnegie Museum.

00:10:05.230 --> 00:10:16.851
We're right in the thick of the cars that are on display and we're actually having special hours from opening at 10, which we normally open at 1, but we're going to be open from 10 to 5 on that day.

00:10:16.851 --> 00:10:25.096
We had the curators of the Asian Experiences exhibit on the show a few months ago and I hear that the exhibit is just fantastic.

00:10:25.096 --> 00:10:27.192
We've gotten some great reviews on it.

00:10:27.192 --> 00:10:30.235
Can you give us an update on how the exhibit's going?

00:10:31.245 --> 00:10:32.190
It's going very well.

00:10:32.190 --> 00:10:44.193
In fact, we're adding new displays, including dealing with issues of why the Asians moved, particularly with respect to helping in agriculture.

00:10:44.193 --> 00:10:53.337
We have a new video on discrimination, and so we're continually evolving this part one of the exhibition.

00:10:54.706 --> 00:10:59.105
So part one will end at the end of July and then part two will open up in September.

00:10:59.105 --> 00:11:04.018
So come on out to the Carnegie Museum and see Kings County's Asian experiences.

00:11:04.018 --> 00:11:09.778
So, getting back to the car show, we're still accepting registrations, both online and in person.

00:11:09.778 --> 00:11:15.673
Can you fill us in on the deadlines, because I know this week is you know we're cutting it close on the show being on Saturday.

00:11:15.673 --> 00:11:17.501
So what are some deadlines we need to be aware of?

00:11:18.885 --> 00:11:26.559
Okay, well, until June 5th you can register online at thecarnegiecarshowcom.

00:11:26.559 --> 00:11:32.138
If you register online by June 5th, you also get two tickets to the museum.

00:11:32.138 --> 00:11:43.514
We cut off online registration on June 5th because we need time to organize the cars that have registered, but we will also have a day of registration.

00:11:43.514 --> 00:11:54.009
Now the way it works is those cars that have pre-registered will come in on 8th Street and have a quicker entrance because we already have all of their information.

00:11:54.009 --> 00:12:09.494
The people that register on the day of will come in on 9th Street and that, necessarily, is slower because we need to get their information, their car information, their registration, payment and whatnot.

00:12:09.494 --> 00:12:27.769
So we really encourage folks to register online at carnegiecarshowcom before June 5th and if anybody has any problems registering online, they can email us at carnegiecarshow at gmailcom.

00:12:27.769 --> 00:12:37.355
That's carnegiecarshow at gmailcom, and Carla, who is administering the registrations, will get back in touch with whoever needs help.

00:12:38.500 --> 00:12:45.837
So, mike, how does the Carnegie Museum of Kings County see this as part of community and activity that the community can be proud of?

00:12:45.837 --> 00:12:49.154
But also it serves a different function with the museum as well.

00:12:50.164 --> 00:12:54.118
Well, we've set up this car show initially as a fundraiser for the museum.

00:12:54.118 --> 00:13:02.534
We're a nonprofit organization and we have to fund ourselves for what we do in terms of improving our facilities, for what we do in terms of improving our facilities.

00:13:02.534 --> 00:13:19.076
So it's the opportunity for people to come down and see Hanford, enjoy downtown Hanford, but also become aware that as a museum, we're here too and we welcome people to come to the car show and also come to the museum with our extended hours during the car show.

00:13:20.645 --> 00:13:27.168
So, by every indication, this show is going to attract thousands of people to downtown Hanford on Saturday.

00:13:27.168 --> 00:13:34.272
We're so excited and, mike, can you tell us a little bit about the impact of this show on the community in downtown Hanford?

00:13:35.293 --> 00:13:40.068
This will be our fifth auto event and our third annual Carnegie Museum car show.

00:13:40.068 --> 00:13:42.572
This show has been supported by the car community.

00:13:42.572 --> 00:13:45.515
Carnegie Museum car show this show has been supported by the car community, so we're growing and we thank them.

00:13:45.515 --> 00:13:53.942
Our goals are also to make the show pleasant for the car owners, profitable for our vendors, an enjoyable day for the public and to raise some needed funds for our museum.

00:13:53.942 --> 00:13:56.432
We're happy to help show off our city too.

00:13:56.432 --> 00:14:00.394
I want to thank you for the opportunity to share our event with your audience.

00:14:00.394 --> 00:14:04.636
We hope to see them in Hanford on Dowdy and 8th, on Saturday, june 8th.

00:14:04.636 --> 00:14:11.157
We look forward to seeing a lot of people enjoying these great cars and we invite and welcome people to see our wonderful museum.

00:14:16.365 --> 00:14:18.591
Well, that's all the time we have for this week's show.

00:14:18.591 --> 00:14:20.155
