Welcome to this episode of the Hanford Insider.

00:00:45.886 --> 00:00:47.289
I'm your host, rob Bentley.

00:00:47.289 --> 00:00:48.353
Thanks for listening.

00:00:48.353 --> 00:00:54.133

This is your chance to ask them questions and give them input.

00:01:11.566 --> 00:01:14.680
I'll have them both on next week's show to give some more information about this opportunity for you to speak with them directly.

Last Wednesday evening the Revenue Measure Committee concluded their five-week study on the City's financial situation.

00:01:22.028 --> 00:01:27.807
They heard from each of the City's departments and even had a field trip to tour some of the areas of concern.

00:01:27.807 --> 00:01:40.810
At the end of Wednesday's meeting they voted to send their recommendation to the city council for further consideration of a sales tax increase to help fund police, fire, streets code enforcement and other needs.

00:01:40.810 --> 00:01:47.525
The city will receive the presentation from RMC Chair Martin Devine at the May 7th study session.

00:01:47.525 --> 00:01:54.572
I'd like to give Laura Lutz a shout out for being selected as the Seroptimist International of Hanford Teacher of the Year.

She was featured on the December 3rd edition of the Insider.

00:02:00.974 --> 00:02:03.040
Congratulations Laura of the Insider.

00:03:56.591 --> 00:04:00.088
Send your information to hanfordinsider at gmailcom.

00:04:00.088 --> 00:04:05.072
Be sure to subscribe to my weekly newsletter to get a complete calendar of events.

00:04:05.072 --> 00:04:19.807
Well, it's that time again.

00:04:19.807 --> 00:04:27.790
It's Thursday Night Marketplace in the Hanford Civic Auditorium Park and we are privileged to be here with Jim Castleman from Main Street, hanford.

00:04:27.790 --> 00:04:28.451
How are you doing, jim?

00:04:28.451 --> 00:04:30.184
Good Rob, how are you?

00:04:30.184 --> 00:04:31.307
I'm doing?

00:04:31.307 --> 00:04:32.682
Great, hey, jim.

00:04:32.682 --> 00:04:35.610
So how many years has Marketplace been going now?

00:04:36.560 --> 00:04:39.790
Well, this will be its 24th year.

00:04:39.790 --> 00:04:40.091
Wow.

00:04:40.091 --> 00:04:48.954
So we had one year where we had the COVID and had to really downsize the market, but it's been going on for 24 years.

00:04:48.954 --> 00:04:50.524
We started in 2000.

00:04:50.524 --> 00:04:51.970
What a run.

00:04:51.970 --> 00:04:55.048
Yes, I started out as a volunteer in 2000.

00:04:55.048 --> 00:05:04.175
Currently I'm president of the Main Street Board, but I've been involved in the music with the market for all 24 of those years.

00:05:05.440 --> 00:05:08.209
So 2024 looks to be a little bit different.

00:05:08.209 --> 00:05:08.850
Some changes.

00:05:08.850 --> 00:05:16.050
We've noticed some of the improvements going on in the park and stuff and that kind of impacts the setup for Thursday Night Marketplace.

00:05:16.050 --> 00:05:19.690
Can you give us a little sneak peek at what everybody's looking forward to on Thursday night?

00:05:20.319 --> 00:05:26.588
Yeah, unfortunately, you know, the park got pretty beat up over the winter so we had to make some changes.

00:05:26.588 --> 00:05:34.915
They've planted the grass new grass on the west side of the whole park the Irwin Street side and so that really affects us.

00:05:34.915 --> 00:05:41.100
So we're going to move off the grass just about 100 percent, unless it's a tent.

00:05:41.100 --> 00:05:45.752
All of our food vendors will be parked along Dowdy Street, facing into the park.

00:05:45.752 --> 00:05:57.622
They'll be parked along the front of the Civic Auditorium and then parked on the Irwin Street side, facing into the park as well, as the farmers will be right up against Irwin Street and into the park as well.

00:05:57.622 --> 00:06:03.966
So everything will be facing into the park, but there won't be all the stuff that you saw inside the park.

00:06:03.966 --> 00:06:06.422
It to be staying off the grass as much as possible.

00:06:07.324 --> 00:06:15.348
So one of the things that I see in the marketplace is I see a lot of people bringing blankets and chairs, so this will actually open up more space for them to be able to do that.

00:06:16.850 --> 00:06:17.271
Totally.

00:06:17.271 --> 00:06:22.536
The whole center of the park will be open to come down, throw out a blanket, bring your lawn chairs.

00:06:22.536 --> 00:06:25.720
We've got more food vendors than we've ever had.

00:06:25.720 --> 00:06:27.562
We've got more vendors than we've ever had.

00:06:27.562 --> 00:06:29.184
In fact, we have a waiting list of vendors.

00:06:29.184 --> 00:06:45.084
There's so many people that want to participate in the market blankets, lawn chairs, people buying from the food vendors, coming back and eating at their blanket, listening to the music, because the music's loud enough to hear around the whole park.

00:06:45.084 --> 00:06:48.427
So it's just a nice night out in downtown Hanford.

00:06:48.427 --> 00:06:55.649
It doesn't really no entrance fee, easy to come down, you don't have to spend a lot of money and you can have a great night out with your family.

00:06:56.610 --> 00:06:57.591
So I just thought about this.

00:06:57.591 --> 00:06:59.012
You know blankets, chairs.

00:06:59.012 --> 00:06:59.853
What about pets?

00:06:59.853 --> 00:07:03.956
I see, sometimes I see people on pets and I know on the street there was concern.

00:07:03.956 --> 00:07:08.899
But now that it's in the park, what's Main Street's policy on pets at the Thursday night marketplace is?

00:07:08.920 --> 00:07:29.172
within the beer and wine garden, and we're not quite sure what we're going to do about that yet, but last year we had a couple of dog fights and we had, you know, somebody, a dog, take an ice cream cone from a kid, and I mean.

00:07:29.172 --> 00:07:40.560
So it gets intense in there, sometimes with a popular band, and you know, we'd like to, hopefully they'll stay on leashes and people will, you know, hopefully have them behave.

00:07:40.560 --> 00:07:42.036
We don't really have a policy though.

00:07:42.709 --> 00:07:43.834
So you mentioned the dance floor.

00:07:43.834 --> 00:07:45.175
Let's get right to it.

00:07:45.175 --> 00:07:48.139
Tell us about some of the groups that you have lined up for the entertainment this year.

00:07:49.250 --> 00:07:50.817
Yeah, well, I'm really excited about that.

00:07:50.817 --> 00:07:54.940
We've got 10 brand new groups that have never been at the market before.

00:07:54.940 --> 00:08:07.822
We've got some younger groups that we've pulled out of that are very popular out of some of the different areas around us the box, vibe, check, josh day band, some some younger bands coming in.

00:08:07.822 --> 00:08:13.384
Of course, our regulars, you know, august will kick it off again, like it normally it has for years.

00:08:13.384 --> 00:08:23.737
A califas will be here, but the 10 new groups I'm I'm excited about, uh run for Cover will be here, gen FM Travis Brooks, locally.

00:08:23.737 --> 00:08:29.454
So there's going to be a lot of new excitement about the bands, I think.

00:08:29.454 --> 00:08:39.214
So hopefully people will check them out on their Facebook pages or their YouTube and come out once they find out if they like the type of music.

00:08:39.214 --> 00:08:41.159
But I think everybody's going to be really pleased.

00:08:42.029 --> 00:08:46.999
Yeah, I've noticed on the social media oftentimes during the week talking about bands.

00:08:46.999 --> 00:08:48.365
They provide your social media.

00:08:48.365 --> 00:08:55.275
People there at Main Street will provide links to some of the groups so people can check out their social media, youtube links and such like that.

00:08:56.773 --> 00:08:59.118
Yeah, we try to do that as much as possible.

00:08:59.118 --> 00:09:01.482
Link to the band so that people can check them out.

00:09:02.293 --> 00:09:04.370
So let's talk about the food truck situation.

00:09:04.370 --> 00:09:08.659
You know people think of food trucks as tacos or churros.

00:09:08.659 --> 00:09:19.243
You know barbecue trailers, but there's a lot of different kinds of foods that are going to be available and some of those food trucks actually have blossomed into businesses downtown.

00:09:19.243 --> 00:09:20.434
Let's highlight a few of those.

00:09:21.389 --> 00:09:24.038
Yeah, well, we're actually sitting in one right now.

00:09:24.038 --> 00:09:34.816
The Acai Bar had a food trailer out at the market for the last three or four years, I believe, and the Ola Cafecito has been out to the market, but that's happening.

00:09:34.816 --> 00:09:41.421
Fatty Albert's has been out to the market for years now and when they first came to town they started being part of the market.

00:09:41.421 --> 00:09:59.658
This year we've got probably six new food truck vendors and some of our regulars, but there's going to be something for everybody, from a hamburger to a hot dog, to tacos, to burritos, the Hawaiian barbecue, you name it.

00:09:59.658 --> 00:10:02.099
There's going to be a lot of choices out there for the whole family.

00:10:02.099 --> 00:10:05.339
So we're excited about that.

00:10:05.339 --> 00:10:11.601
We've got more food vendors and more vendors in general than we've ever had at the Thursday Night Marketplace.

00:10:11.601 --> 00:10:12.423
It's going to be bigger.

00:10:12.423 --> 00:10:24.563
It sounds maybe weird the way that we're setting it up, but I think once people get used to it and find out the open space it'll be and where they can come with family, I think everybody will really like it.

00:10:25.230 --> 00:10:29.081
And I think it also attracts people to downtown, to other businesses.

00:10:29.081 --> 00:10:35.038
I think of not only the two that you mentioned, but I think of Zaytuna and El Tarasco.

00:10:35.038 --> 00:10:40.985
Hop Forged, the hamburger place across the street from the police station of Superior Dairy.

00:10:40.985 --> 00:10:43.919
A lot of these businesses are gaining additional customers as well.

00:10:46.274 --> 00:10:47.578
Yeah, that's a really good point, rob.

00:10:47.578 --> 00:10:57.889
I've talked to most of those businesses that you just mentioned and they have all told me, probably for the last 10 years, that Thursday night is their busiest night.

00:10:57.889 --> 00:11:02.418
When the market's going from May to October it's their busiest night of the weekend.

00:11:02.418 --> 00:11:04.389
They're all doing land office business.

00:11:04.389 --> 00:11:26.317
If you walk around and I challenge everybody out there, just walk around from Lush to the Superior, to El Tarasco, to Fatty Albers, to Zaytuna, to any quesadilla gorilla to acai bar, they'll all be full on Thursday night marketplace and sometimes when it's really hot, they're all full until about 7 o'clock and then people will come into the market.

00:11:26.317 --> 00:11:47.672
So you know and I don't want to leave out our farmers either We've got some really dedicated farmers and it's really great to have that ability to buy fruits and vegetables farm to table, where I mean, if you've ever had a, you know, a fresh broccoli out of the fields or anything like that, it's got a whole different flavor than what you buy in the supermarket.

00:11:49.294 --> 00:11:49.554
Yeah.

00:11:49.554 --> 00:11:53.844
So this is my opportunity to give everybody at the Acai Bar a big shout out.

00:11:53.844 --> 00:12:11.464
So this is actually our second time that we've recorded on location at the Acai Bar and they've always been a great host, and I was speaking with them earlier about their special Thursday Night Marketplace hours for them to be able to expose more people to their product and just the cool place that this is.

00:12:11.464 --> 00:12:14.941
So I just want to thank everybody here for hosting us once again.

00:12:14.941 --> 00:12:17.938
So let's talk about some of the vendors.

00:12:17.938 --> 00:12:22.330
Let's just say that the Hanford Insider Podcast will be at the first marketplace.

00:12:22.330 --> 00:12:29.038
I'm pretty excited about that, talking and meeting some of the listeners who have been supporting this show since August.

00:12:29.038 --> 00:12:30.897
What about some of the other vendors?

00:12:30.897 --> 00:12:32.796
I know you have the book lady.

00:12:32.796 --> 00:12:33.779
We've had her on the show.

00:12:33.779 --> 00:12:36.715
There's lots of different vendors, I think of COS.

00:12:36.715 --> 00:12:39.639
Just tell us about some of the vendors you have lined up.

00:12:41.929 --> 00:12:43.113
Yeah, rob, there's all kinds of information.

00:12:43.113 --> 00:12:45.719
There's craft vendors, there's all kinds of information.

00:12:45.719 --> 00:12:47.129
The junior colleges are out there.

00:12:47.129 --> 00:12:49.756
You can get all kinds of information from lots of people.

00:12:49.756 --> 00:12:55.436
You know I'm not as privy as our director would be to all of them.

00:12:55.436 --> 00:13:13.210
I've been really busy trying to book 27 bands, I think so, and so I've got a big budget and we're just proud to say that we really have bands all the way from, you know, from Porterville to Fresno, to Visayta, to Larry, to Hanford, to Lemoore.

00:13:13.210 --> 00:13:18.383
So it's a really good cross section of bands from the whole Central Valley.

00:13:19.770 --> 00:13:25.799
So one of the common questions that we get about Marketplace is why can't it go longer?

00:13:25.799 --> 00:13:35.171
I know you know, but could you kind of share with our listeners as to what kind of effort goes into this and why maybe it couldn't go a few more weeks or months?

00:13:35.652 --> 00:13:39.197
It's a ton of effort Behind the scenes.

00:13:39.197 --> 00:13:47.741
People do not realize how much work it really is to put on an event and if you've ever been involved in a one-time event you know how much that is.

00:13:47.741 --> 00:13:54.722
Well, this is 27 events every week, from the first Thursday in May to Halloween.

00:13:54.722 --> 00:14:01.914
This year, actually, the very last market this year is going to be on Halloween night and we're going to have the Marie Wilson band in from Fresno.

00:14:01.914 --> 00:14:10.099
She's from England and she has numerous bands like a Fleetwood Mac cover band, really, really good, played at the King's Brew Festival for years.

00:14:10.099 --> 00:14:11.890
It's going to be here on Halloween night.

00:14:11.890 --> 00:14:22.681
So a lot, you know security and porta potties and encroachment permits and a dance permit and where we have to rent the park.

00:14:22.681 --> 00:14:27.140
There's just a lot of work and a lot of costs that goes into it every year.

00:14:27.590 --> 00:14:38.162
And all the money and we're proud to say this all the money that Main Street makes from the Thursday Night Marketplace or any of our events, all of that money is spent in downtown Hanford.

00:14:38.162 --> 00:14:40.455
For example, witches Night Out.

00:14:40.455 --> 00:14:43.721
We buy goodie bags for all the witches that are on the street.

00:14:43.721 --> 00:14:51.809
We spent $30,000 in goodies to put in those bags and all those goodies were bought from our downtown businesses.

00:14:51.809 --> 00:14:55.941
So in one event we spent over $30,000 in downtown Hanford.

00:14:55.941 --> 00:14:59.120
So all of the money is earmarked for downtown.

00:14:59.120 --> 00:15:08.336
You know, yes, we put on events and yes, it looks like we're making a lot of money every night at the Beer and Wine Garden and all that, but it all goes back into downtown.

00:15:08.336 --> 00:15:13.688
So every money that you spend at the Thursday Night Marketplace it goes back into downtown.

00:15:13.688 --> 00:15:16.537
Anything that we make to the good goes back into downtown Hanford.

00:15:17.365 --> 00:15:20.787
Yeah, because I know Main Street is not only a party planner.

00:15:20.787 --> 00:15:30.832
It seems like from the surface, but the downtown businesses know that there's things like facade grants and I know they're involved in several here on this property.

00:15:32.214 --> 00:15:34.274
We do all kinds of things downtown.

00:15:34.274 --> 00:15:41.558
If you've got a business and you want to paint the outside of your business or put new awnings or do signage, we offer grants to do that.

00:15:41.558 --> 00:15:47.982
We have a listing of all the empty spaces downtown so we're always trying to interface with people and trying to fill those up.

00:15:47.982 --> 00:15:53.215
So there's a lot that we do that goes behind the scenes that people don't realize.

00:15:53.215 --> 00:15:54.798
Plus, we're social media.

00:15:54.798 --> 00:15:59.591
We're all over social media, marketing Hanford to all the surrounding areas.

00:15:59.591 --> 00:16:03.335
We had a heat map this year that showed us where all the people were coming from.

00:16:03.335 --> 00:16:21.787
They were coming from as far away as Kerman, Madera to Porterville, to the Foothills, to Corcoran, Avenel, Kalinga, where all these people are coming from to visit our city, the influx to our city, to find out what we're all about.

00:16:21.787 --> 00:16:27.957
I don't know how the city could not be just ecstatic about that in marketing their community.

00:16:28.719 --> 00:16:29.039
For sure.

00:16:29.039 --> 00:16:42.979
I know that, being on the board at the Carnegie Museum of Kings County we do studies, similar studies, as to people who come into town and we had a recent tea ceremony and it was a small event but it was amazing how many people came from out of town.

00:16:42.979 --> 00:16:49.097
So definitely these kinds of cultural events, social events, allow people to kind of experience Hanford.

00:16:50.385 --> 00:16:53.350
Yeah, they experience that thing that.

00:16:53.350 --> 00:17:08.286
I don't know how many people here in the community realize it, but this downtown park, Courthouse Square, is probably one of the most significant architectural parks in the whole valley.

00:17:08.286 --> 00:17:11.071
You can go from Modesto to Bakersfield.

00:17:11.071 --> 00:17:19.117
You will not find anything like this with the architectural gems that are up in this park, and we should be so proud of that as a community.

00:17:19.117 --> 00:17:22.094
That is the heart and soul of Hanford.

00:17:22.094 --> 00:17:26.355
When you have visitors come to Hanford to visit, where do you take them?

00:17:26.355 --> 00:17:28.790
You take them downtown, you take them to the park.

00:17:28.790 --> 00:17:31.693
They look at all these buildings and they go oh my gosh.

00:17:31.693 --> 00:17:38.875
You know, this is like a part of America we thought we'd never see again Because those were built in the late 1800s.

00:17:38.875 --> 00:17:41.271
I mean, it's amazing what we have here.

00:17:43.605 --> 00:17:49.910
It's so awesome, so awesome, so let's wrap this up here this Thursday night coming up.

00:17:49.910 --> 00:17:53.038
Can you let us know the hours of the marketplace?

00:17:53.038 --> 00:17:58.306
And I know there's like the farmers can't sell their products until a certain time.

00:17:58.306 --> 00:18:01.797
Can you give us some of those specifics on the time and days?

00:18:03.340 --> 00:18:07.133
Actually everybody starts showing up about 3.30 to set up.

00:18:07.133 --> 00:18:15.670
Five o'clock is usually when things start pushing towards opening and then 5.30 is when farmers can actually sell their produce and things.

00:18:15.670 --> 00:18:17.692
Actually we can start serving beer and wine.

00:18:17.692 --> 00:18:20.817
Music starts at six and goes till nine.

00:18:20.817 --> 00:18:25.890
Then we spend probably two hours of trying to make the park look like the park again in the morning.

00:18:25.890 --> 00:18:30.527
So basically you can come down, we're ready to go by five o'clock.

00:18:30.527 --> 00:18:32.873
Farmers can't sell produce to five 30.

00:18:32.873 --> 00:18:36.730
And that's just given people a chance to get off work, get down to the market.

00:18:37.049 --> 00:18:38.032
And it's really interesting.

00:18:38.032 --> 00:18:40.939
You know, over all the years we have three distinct crowds.

00:18:40.939 --> 00:18:48.034
We have an early arriving crowd that come in for their fruits and vegetables and some of those folks you can see them with three or four bags full of fruits and vegetables.

00:18:48.034 --> 00:18:48.596
They go home.

00:18:48.596 --> 00:18:54.846
We have the foodies that come in for all the food and the families and sit out and eat and come down for dinner.

00:18:54.846 --> 00:18:58.428
And then we have the beer and wine garden and the dancing and the band.

00:18:58.428 --> 00:19:05.192
There's a little bit of overflow between the music and the foodies, but it's really three distinct crowds.

00:19:05.192 --> 00:19:07.253
There's people that come down.

00:19:07.253 --> 00:19:19.383
They want to dance, they want to hear some good music and have a great time, and in 24 years I can tell you that I have heard this so many times, and so many people from other communities come up to me and say thank you for what you guys do.

00:19:19.383 --> 00:19:27.597
We wish our town did something like this, and so the Thursday night marketplace is sacred to me, and I think it should be sacred to anybody in this community.

00:19:28.185 --> 00:19:30.614
Yeah, well, let's take care of it and make sure it continues.

00:19:30.614 --> 00:19:42.556
The Thursday night marketplace will continue on until Thursday, october 31st, halloween night, and every Thursday, with the exception of maybe some warm weather.

00:19:42.556 --> 00:19:44.311
What's the warm weather policy this year?

00:19:45.105 --> 00:19:54.157
So we aren't holding a market on July 4th and the heat policy is 106 degrees.

00:19:54.157 --> 00:20:01.739
So if anything pushes that, if it gets predicted, it's going to be that we cancel on Tuesday.

00:20:01.739 --> 00:20:10.130
So we're watching the weather and if we see it's going to be like that, we need to cancel on Tuesday, because we need to give everybody a heads up the bands, the vendors, and so that's when it happens.

00:20:10.130 --> 00:20:11.289
But it's 106 degrees.

00:20:12.405 --> 00:20:19.419
So make sure you follow Main Street Hanford on social media so you can get that alert when they give out information about the marketplace.

00:20:19.419 --> 00:20:22.061
Once again, Jim, thank you so much for coming on the show.

00:20:22.082 --> 00:20:22.484
Thanks for having me.

00:20:22.484 --> 00:20:35.434
It's always an awesome experience and we look forward to seeing everybody at the Thursday Night Marketplace this Thursday yeah we'll see you on the streets, and if you come up to me and mention that you heard me on the Hanford Insider, I'll buy you a beer.

00:20:36.457 --> 00:20:37.638
Hey, you got to come by my booth.

00:20:37.638 --> 00:20:40.405
Thanks again, jim.

00:20:40.405 --> 00:20:48.512
That was great for Jim to be able to stop by the show and share with us about all the exciting plans for the Thursday night marketplace.

00:20:48.512 --> 00:20:54.218
I wanted to let you know that I'll be having a booth set up at the marketplace directly across from the Bastille.

00:20:54.218 --> 00:20:55.419
I'd love to see you.

00:20:55.419 --> 00:20:59.342

00:20:59.342 --> 00:21:08.758

00:22:08.005 --> 00:22:31.650
The Huskies are 2-8 in Tri-County Sequoia League play and 7-16 overall, and sticking with Hanford West, but on the softball side, where the Huskies had the offense rolling as they took down Sierra Pacific on the road 15-11, before falling to Reedley in another high-scoring game 13-12.

00:22:39.260 --> 00:22:50.217

00:22:56.270 --> 00:23:12.607
