00:00:00.221 --> 00:00:02.205
On this week's episode of the Hanford Insider.

00:00:02.205 --> 00:00:13.031
Rob will give us a quick community news update, then Margaret Cartiel will let us know what's happening at this year's Veterans Day event in Courthouse Square, and I'll be back with your sports report.

00:00:13.031 --> 00:00:16.940
This is the Hanford Insider for Monday, november 4th.

00:00:33.933 --> 00:00:43.031
Welcome to the Hanford Insider, the podcast, where we dive into what makes our community tick, From local stories and hidden gems to conversations with people shaping our neighborhood.

00:00:43.031 --> 00:00:45.826
We're here to celebrate, explore and connect.

00:00:45.826 --> 00:00:56.642
Whether you're new to Hanford or a longtime local, this is your source for everything happening in our town, from events and news to unique conversations with people who make Hanford what it is.

00:00:56.642 --> 00:00:58.165
Thanks for tuning in.

00:00:58.165 --> 00:00:59.509
Let's jump right into it.

00:00:59.509 --> 00:01:01.840
In community news this week.

00:01:01.840 --> 00:01:04.924
Don't forget to fill out your ballots and turn them in by Tuesday.

00:01:04.924 --> 00:01:12.031
If you have any questions, please call the Elections Department at 559-852-4401.

00:01:13.132 --> 00:01:16.855
The next regularly scheduled City Council meeting is on Tuesday, November 5th.

00:01:16.855 --> 00:01:26.560
Items on the agenda include a badge-pending ceremony for Hanford Police Officers Manuel Caceres and Brian Milligan.

00:01:26.560 --> 00:01:30.034
The city is also seeking approval to replace eight broken slides on the Freedom Park play structure.

00:01:30.034 --> 00:01:48.043
The one big news item on the agenda is that the city is looking at entering into an agreement with a developer to sell the old Kings County Courthouse to esteemed land company LLC to finally bring the old courthouse back to life as Barrel House Brewing by the summer of 2026.

00:01:48.043 --> 00:01:56.210
This $1 sale would grant ownership to the developer while ensuring the city's ability to preserve the building's historic integrity.

00:01:56.210 --> 00:02:07.947
This partnership requires the developer to have both the capital and expertise to undertake the restoration, along with a commitment to meet the city's preservation standards and performance expectations.

00:02:07.947 --> 00:02:10.783
We'll have an update on next week's show for sure.

00:02:11.649 --> 00:02:15.805
The Hanford Chamber of Commerce is planning the annual Christmas parade on the day after Thanksgiving.

00:03:48.871 --> 00:04:14.567
Well, as we know, Veterans Day is coming up on Monday, November 11th, and we have some very special activities coming up in Hanford, and we're here with Margaret Cardiel, and she is organizing the event at the Hanford Civic Auditorium Park on Monday November 11th.

00:04:14.567 --> 00:04:15.509
Welcome to the show, Margaret.

00:04:15.960 --> 00:04:16.523
Thank you, Rob.

00:04:16.523 --> 00:04:17.065
How are you doing?

00:04:17.220 --> 00:04:17.963
I'm doing great.

00:04:17.963 --> 00:04:22.387
Hey, margaret, we'll have time to get into the event, but let's talk a little bit about your service.

00:04:22.387 --> 00:04:28.610
We're honoring veterans this week and next week in the show, and tell us about your service to our country.

00:04:29.351 --> 00:04:34.288
Well, right out of high school I joined the Army, did my two years actually.

00:04:34.288 --> 00:04:45.389
After that I decided to go into the Navy, went with the Navy and I stayed 20 years, loved it, served on both sides, served in Iraq.

00:04:45.389 --> 00:04:49.353
I worked in finance and supply.

00:04:49.353 --> 00:04:51.641
I was on five ships.

00:04:51.641 --> 00:04:58.033
My brothers were in the Army during Vietnam, my other brother was in the Air Force.

00:04:58.033 --> 00:05:00.783
We all thankfully God.

00:05:00.783 --> 00:05:12.028
We all came back home and after that went to college, worked, retired and now I'm the commander of the VFW.

00:05:13.411 --> 00:05:13.812
That's great.

00:05:13.812 --> 00:05:15.187
So what brought you to Hanford?

00:05:16.315 --> 00:05:16.959
This is interesting.

00:05:16.959 --> 00:05:26.862
My family, my mom's family, came from Salt Lake City during the Depression and once they were here back after my uncles came back from war, they were in the war too.

00:05:26.862 --> 00:05:29.548
They were educated, they became engineers.

00:05:29.548 --> 00:05:34.408
They moved to Los Angeles for better jobs and most of the family did move there.

00:05:34.408 --> 00:05:35.814
They got married.

00:05:35.814 --> 00:05:45.452
I was born in Los Angeles and raised there, but my oldest sister I'm the baby, my oldest sister came back with her husband and her family.

00:05:46.014 --> 00:05:54.581
I'm single, and one day, about four years ago, my niece said you know, auntie, I think you need to come back home.

00:05:54.581 --> 00:06:02.923
And I go home, hanford, I'm not from Hanford, she goes no, that way, if anything happens to you, we could take care of you.

00:06:02.923 --> 00:06:05.249
What a blessing, for sure.

00:06:05.249 --> 00:06:06.271
What a blessing.

00:06:06.271 --> 00:06:14.454
So I'm here and now I get to see everything that my mother saw when she came as about 12 years old.

00:06:14.454 --> 00:06:16.444
But it's different.

00:06:16.444 --> 00:06:26.196
Now I get to enjoy things that she never could have ever enjoyed, and I come back with an education she could never go to college.

00:06:26.196 --> 00:06:27.060
They couldn't afford it.

00:06:27.060 --> 00:06:31.692
I don't even think she finished high school because we were busy working.

00:06:32.319 --> 00:06:46.007
But now that I'm back here in this small town, I see the charm, the history, the people, and I remember it from back in the 50s because my one uncle did stay here, so we used to come from Los Angeles to drive over here to visit him.

00:06:46.007 --> 00:06:57.494
And it was back in the days when you had outhouses and they didn't have a bathtub, so they would fill up a tub with hot water to give you a bath.

00:06:57.494 --> 00:06:58.341
I remember that.

00:06:58.341 --> 00:07:04.334
But what I remember the most is what I felt when I went back to the city.

00:07:06.779 --> 00:07:10.113
I remember the most is what I felt when I went back to the city how grateful I was and we were not very rich, and I thought you know what?

00:07:10.113 --> 00:07:11.439
All I do is turn the tap and I got hot water.

00:07:11.439 --> 00:07:16.428
You know, I don't have to go outside in the cold rain to go to the bathroom.

00:07:16.428 --> 00:07:23.307
It made me look at life with different eyes as a young lady and I'm very thankful for that.

00:07:23.307 --> 00:07:27.595
But, being back here, my mother is buried here.

00:07:27.595 --> 00:07:45.312
She came back to die here and she's buried here with her brothers and cousins and my brother and my nephew, and I think she would have been happy to be back here home.

00:07:45.312 --> 00:07:46.274
This is home for her.

00:07:46.980 --> 00:07:48.303
Yeah, definitely that's special.

00:07:48.303 --> 00:07:51.151
So how did you get involved with the local VFW?

00:07:51.699 --> 00:07:54.745
Well, you're retired and you go bonkers.

00:07:54.745 --> 00:07:55.848
You got to do something.

00:07:55.848 --> 00:08:02.444
So I looked it up and I said let me see what they do in this community.

00:08:02.444 --> 00:08:05.690
And so I joined, got involved.

00:08:05.690 --> 00:08:09.081
My first job was a quartermaster the most important job.

00:08:09.081 --> 00:08:17.663
We pay the bills, we're in charge of a lot of paperwork requirements and you answer to the commander.

00:08:17.663 --> 00:08:23.374
And I did that for about three years and now I am the commander.

00:08:24.555 --> 00:08:25.175
That's great.

00:08:25.175 --> 00:08:30.163
So you have this event, this huge event that's been going on for a few years.

00:08:30.163 --> 00:08:38.615
I've been a participant in it in previous years and it's just wonderful that the VFW puts on this event for the local veterans in our area.

00:08:38.615 --> 00:08:41.985
Can you tell us a little bit about what's going to happen in the park on November 11th?

00:08:50.774 --> 00:08:51.416
band we always do.

00:08:51.416 --> 00:08:52.557
We're going to have food vendors.

00:08:52.557 --> 00:08:53.158
Budweiser will be there.

00:08:53.158 --> 00:08:56.504
We'll also have regular vendors who have different crafts and very interesting.

00:08:56.504 --> 00:09:01.918
I've met them and seen the stuff that they create and it's pretty nice.

00:09:01.918 --> 00:09:06.884
And then, of course, we'll have the popcorn vendors.

00:09:06.884 --> 00:09:08.184
Everybody wants that.

00:09:08.706 --> 00:09:17.004
Well, also in the main auditorium we also have our junior ROTC competitions and that's all day.

00:09:17.004 --> 00:09:23.743
It's really great and we get to see the younger kids who are going to wind up being future officers.

00:09:23.743 --> 00:09:25.486
A lot of people don't know that.

00:09:25.486 --> 00:09:27.916
They say what happens to them.

00:09:27.916 --> 00:09:28.836
They become officers.

00:09:28.836 --> 00:09:31.599
They go through some training, which is great.

00:09:31.599 --> 00:09:36.280
The other thing we have is we're also going to have a presentation.

00:09:36.280 --> 00:09:43.645
We have a gentleman that is a member that's 100 years old and a very nice guy.

00:09:43.645 --> 00:09:46.726
You would not know he was 100.

00:09:46.726 --> 00:09:49.749
You would swear he's maybe 80, not even.

00:09:49.749 --> 00:09:53.731
He still walks, cooks his own food, keeps his own house.

00:09:53.731 --> 00:09:55.893
So we're going to present him with an award.

00:09:58.894 --> 00:10:06.447
We also have we're doing raffles, and the reason why we do raffles is to accumulate funds for other organizations who help the community.

00:10:06.447 --> 00:10:10.311
Here in Hanford we have the Escapalian Church.

00:10:10.311 --> 00:10:12.519
They give meals Monday through Friday.

00:10:12.519 --> 00:10:18.900
We have a lot of homeless veterans that eat there and I'm so thankful for their contribution.

00:10:18.900 --> 00:10:33.302
And then we have St Bridget's they do the same and they also have clothing and they have another store where you can get food and they have another store where you can get food and you can get clothing as well, and so we contribute to those two.

00:10:33.302 --> 00:10:35.984
And we have others that we do contribute to.

00:10:35.984 --> 00:10:40.807
If we don't contribute monetarily-wise, we do voluntarily.

00:10:40.807 --> 00:10:51.895
We'll go there and help them, and we do have some members who do that on their off time and some of them do.

00:10:51.895 --> 00:10:53.139
We have one gentleman that does the Salvation Army.

00:10:53.139 --> 00:11:06.644
He drives the trucks to go get the items that they need, and sometimes he could be doing an eight-hour shift for four days straight and some people would say, well, he doesn't get paid, so it's strictly voluntary.

00:11:07.505 --> 00:11:14.975
So you have the presentation that you're making to the Centurion, and you have some other activities going on as well too, some presentations and ceremonies.

00:11:15.336 --> 00:11:15.856
Yes, we are.

00:11:15.856 --> 00:11:19.928
We have a couple of awards that we're putting out.

00:11:19.928 --> 00:11:24.157
We also have a police officer of the year, teacher of the year.

00:11:24.157 --> 00:11:32.527
We also have every year essay contest, and we have the high school level and then we have the middle school.

00:11:32.527 --> 00:11:36.671
So they also will be presented with awards.

00:11:38.135 --> 00:11:39.740
And so the hours for this event?

00:11:39.740 --> 00:11:41.524
I understand it ends at 430.

00:11:41.524 --> 00:11:42.486
What time does it start?

00:11:42.486 --> 00:11:47.419
10 o'clock in the morning 10 o'clock in the morning, and then is there a time for the.

00:11:47.419 --> 00:11:55.049
I know you said the NJROTC groups are going to be competing in the Civic Auditorium and they receive awards too, don't they?

00:11:55.269 --> 00:12:00.576
Yes, they do Within the auditorium.

00:12:00.576 --> 00:12:01.638
We do not do anything with that.

00:12:01.638 --> 00:12:10.399
That's between their sergeants who are in charge, our commanders, because it's an all-day event where they're judging them and they present it to them.

00:12:10.399 --> 00:12:12.164
We don't do anything with that.

00:12:12.835 --> 00:12:28.128
So, as you mentioned, the VFW not only puts on this type of event, but they raise funds so that they can support other organizations, and I know that remembering our veterans and honoring our veterans is a very noble mission for your organization.

00:12:28.128 --> 00:12:35.827
As we're here at Veterans Day 2024, why do you feel it's important to continue to honor those who served our country?

00:12:36.875 --> 00:12:47.903
We just had our 75th anniversary and these are the first Nisei comrades who got together after the World War II to create our post.

00:12:47.903 --> 00:13:01.210
And they did so much work here in the community and yet in 75 years nobody in Hanford mentions them, nobody says their name or their accomplishments.

00:13:02.495 --> 00:13:39.394
So when we got together to create this luncheon we had a luncheon for their children and grandchildren and I wanted to make a point that we would say their name aloud, because most of them are buried here in Hanford Cemetery or Calvary Cemetery, and I wanted their children to know that we are grateful for their service, what they did for the community in a time when they were not welcome, they endured and they continued and they did a lot of good things for Hanford.

00:13:39.394 --> 00:14:04.607
So when I think of my veterans whether you were World War II, like my father and my uncles, like my father and my uncles, korean, like my uncle, vietnam, like my brothers and cousins, arak Aran, myself, my nephews I think of all of those who never came home and whose names will never be said, and they need to be.

00:14:04.607 --> 00:14:16.437
And if we don't know all the veterans, that we just say God bless our veterans for what they did for our country in time of need.

00:14:17.946 --> 00:14:25.269
Amen, amen, and I know a big part of that is your contribution to the Asian Experiences exhibit at the Carnegie Museum.

00:14:25.269 --> 00:14:27.496
There's actually a display that you contributed to.

00:14:27.496 --> 00:14:28.827
Can you tell us a little bit about that?

00:14:29.288 --> 00:14:34.192
Yes, when I was speaking to one of our members, he had came from Fresno, from a posted close.

00:14:34.192 --> 00:14:47.211
His name is Robert, he was born in a concentration camp during World War II in Arizona and he had pictures and explained what had happened.

00:14:47.211 --> 00:14:50.873
And I said you know, they never talk about that.

00:14:50.873 --> 00:14:54.995
I don't read it in history books, why.

00:14:54.995 --> 00:14:58.298
And I said it doesn't matter why.

00:14:58.298 --> 00:15:12.347
We are in the now and I said we need to do something about that, not rewrite history, but present history factual.

00:15:12.368 --> 00:15:29.298
So we got together and made facts and got with other family members who had pictures and stories and newspaper clippings and actually DD-214s that told the stories of these brave heroes who went there under odd things.

00:15:29.298 --> 00:15:34.330
They just didn't want them in the military, but they went anyway because they were Americans.

00:15:34.330 --> 00:15:47.975
We did the research, we went to Los Angeles Actually I went to Los Angeles and we went online which is a great thing and other families that still live here, if not here Fresno and we got all this information.

00:15:47.975 --> 00:15:58.153
So he put it together, he got with Gail and then they were talking about doing a thing here at the museum and I said this is great.

00:15:58.153 --> 00:16:00.682
I mean, everything falls into place for a reason.

00:16:00.682 --> 00:16:09.394
And I told him we were just doing that so that we could present it to our post, and since it was our 75th anniversary, I go.

00:16:09.394 --> 00:16:13.673
We cannot continue without recognizing our Nisei's.

00:16:13.673 --> 00:16:15.998
And he said great idea, maggie.

00:16:15.998 --> 00:16:16.846
So that's what we did.

00:16:17.388 --> 00:16:32.750
Well, it's a tremendous display and those of you listening can come down to the Carnegie Museum of Kings County at 109 East 8th Street and see the display on Fridays, saturdays and Sundays from 1 pm to 5 pm, and that goes through December 15th.

00:16:32.750 --> 00:16:49.265
And, margaret, I'd like to thank you for coming on the show because this event on November 11th is so important to our community and, on behalf of the community members, I'd like to thank you for all the work that you and the VFW do every day, but especially on November 11th, on Veterans Day.

00:16:49.746 --> 00:16:56.457
Thank you, rob, from us, the VFW here in Hanford, post 5869,.

00:16:56.457 --> 00:17:00.934
We want to give back to our community and we volunteer and we do these things.

00:17:00.934 --> 00:17:03.005
And people ask all the time why do you do that?

00:17:03.005 --> 00:17:04.047
You have to.

00:17:04.047 --> 00:17:05.107
You have to.

00:17:05.107 --> 00:17:07.028
If you don't, history disappears.

00:17:07.028 --> 00:17:18.659
And as long as you're doing that, you're allowing family members to remember those veterans who are special and who did the ultimate sacrifice.

00:17:18.659 --> 00:17:20.161
We have to do that.

00:17:20.800 --> 00:17:21.122
Thank you.

00:17:21.501 --> 00:17:21.882
Thank you.

00:17:26.786 --> 00:17:30.356
And now it's time for Hanford Insider Sports with Eric Bentley.

00:17:30.356 --> 00:17:41.759
We'll start with the clash of the claws, where Sierra Pacific took down Hanford West easily, winning 48 to nothing.

00:17:41.759 --> 00:17:52.537
The Golden Bear offense had things working all night long, rushing for four touchdowns and passing for two as the defense did its part, keeping a struggling Huskies offense off the scoreboard.

00:17:52.537 --> 00:17:58.077
Now it'll be all eyes on to next season, as neither team made this year's playoffs.

00:17:58.077 --> 00:18:07.936
There was more rivalry action as Hanford High headed over to Lemoore, looking to not only keep the milk can but also cap off an undefeated regular season.

00:18:07.936 --> 00:18:18.977
Looking to not only keep the milk can but also cap off an undefeated regular season, the Bullpups led 8-0 after the first quarter thanks to a Corday glass rushing touchdown and quickly extended that lead to 14 with a Daniel Gomez to JC Turner touchdown pass.

00:18:18.977 --> 00:18:23.085
In the second quarter, lamore answered with a touchdown on their next drive.

00:18:23.085 --> 00:18:30.755
But it was Gomez to Turner, again this time for a 51-yard touchdown, to give the Bullpups a 22-7 halftime lead.

00:18:30.755 --> 00:18:51.730
Daniel Gomez and Tavion Patterson connected for a touchdown coming out of the half and Lamore would answer again to make it 29-14, but neither team scored the rest of the way and the Bullpups came away with a 29-14 victory, hanford High finishes the regular season a perfect 10-0 and are now back-to-back WIL champions.

00:18:52.392 --> 00:19:01.477
The Bullpups are the number four seed in the Central Section 1 AA playoffs and will play host to the fifth seed, clovis Cougars at Neighbor Bowl on Friday night.

00:19:01.477 --> 00:19:12.352
And not only is Hanford High finding success at the varsity level, but both the JV and freshman teams capped off successful 2024 seasons with wins over Lemoore as well.

00:19:12.352 --> 00:19:22.356
The JV finishes their season as WIL champions with an 8-2 record and the freshman team finishes 6-3-1 and WIL co-champions.

00:19:22.356 --> 00:19:31.738
