00:00:22.751 --> 00:00:27.184
This is the Hanford Insider for Monday, August 19th.

00:00:44.201 --> 00:00:47.149
Hey everybody, welcome to this episode of the Hanford Insider.

00:00:47.149 --> 00:00:48.444
I'm your host, rob Bentley.

00:00:48.444 --> 00:00:49.569
Thanks for listening.

00:00:49.569 --> 00:01:01.710
In community news it's going to be a crazy week for Hanford drivers this week, with lots of road closures for the pavement resurfacing projects taking place on a number of major thoroughfares and side streets.

00:01:01.710 --> 00:01:08.167
Please drive carefully and slow down in all work zones and follow detour signs while the work is taking place.

00:01:09.510 --> 00:01:11.521
The Hanford City Council will meet on Tuesday.

00:01:11.521 --> 00:01:19.167
Some of the items on the agenda include a badge-pinning ceremony and oath of office for Officers Armando Prieto and Fawze Akram, frank Mendez and Antonio Lopez.

00:01:19.167 --> 00:01:22.718
Congratulations, frank Mendez and Antonio Lopez.

00:01:22.718 --> 00:01:27.295
Congratulations.

00:01:27.295 --> 00:01:37.850
The Council will approve a resolution in support of a grant for the Federal Railroad Administration regarding a project development grant for an underpass or overpass over the tracks at Grangeville Boulevard near the old YMCA.

00:01:37.850 --> 00:01:43.272
They'll also appropriate funds for additional police vehicles to replace aging ones.

00:01:43.272 --> 00:01:54.129
They're looking for approval of a contract with Four Creeks Incorporated to provide construction management and inspection services for the downtown traffic and pedestrian improvement projects.

00:01:54.129 --> 00:01:54.971
That's in the works.

00:01:54.971 --> 00:02:01.233
A major addition to the agenda packet this week is a complete record of warrants issued by the city.

00:02:01.233 --> 00:02:05.430
In other words, you can now see exactly what the city is spending money on.

00:02:05.430 --> 00:02:14.912
This has always been available on the city website, but city council members have asked for it to be placed on each agenda to provide more transparency for their constituents.

00:02:14.912 --> 00:02:23.453
On Thursday, the city will host their first Citizens Outreach Zoom regarding the upcoming tax revenue, measure H, on the November 5th ballot.

00:02:23.453 --> 00:02:27.325
Follow the city's social media accounts for links to join the Zoom.

00:02:27.325 --> 00:02:32.548
Finally, the city has announced that they've extended the swim season at the plunge through October.

00:02:32.548 --> 00:02:36.945
The pool will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 2 pm to 8 pm.

00:04:54.596 --> 00:04:55.475
Don't miss it.

00:04:55.475 --> 00:05:02.930

Be sure to subscribe to my weekly newsletter to get a complete calendar of events.

00:05:09.230 --> 00:05:28.771
Gives me a great deal of pleasure to welcome to the show Mr Russell Williams, who's a veteran of the United States Navy.

00:05:28.771 --> 00:05:29.593
How are you doing, russell?

00:05:29.593 --> 00:05:30.334
I'm doing good.

00:05:30.334 --> 00:05:34.504
Good Remington, treating you well, yeah somewhat.

00:05:34.863 --> 00:05:38.473
It's like an elevator salesman that has his husband down.

00:05:39.839 --> 00:05:45.744
So, russell, we're here obviously to talk about your service to our country, but also just to get to know you a little bit better.

00:05:45.744 --> 00:05:49.586
Can you tell us a little bit about your upbringing and how you came into the Navy?

00:05:49.605 --> 00:05:56.670
Spent some time there, got basically tired of being shot at, so I went into the Navy and had a good time.

00:05:56.670 --> 00:06:39.067
Like every job, you have good points and bad points, and where have you served, and maybe some ranks that you achieved?

00:06:39.067 --> 00:06:56.274
Oh well, I served on board the USS Kitty Hawk CV-63, uss Constellation CB-64, uss Essex LHD-2, new Orleans with BT-28, which is an IP training for pilots, and as a recruiter or NRD.

00:06:56.274 --> 00:07:01.175
Native Recruiting District, los Angeles, up in Santa Maria, alamboca.

00:07:02.396 --> 00:07:04.935
So you had how many years of service total did you have?

00:07:04.935 --> 00:07:07.896
Basically, 27 years of service.

00:07:07.896 --> 00:07:09.418
27 years, that's amazing.

00:07:09.418 --> 00:07:12.759
What were some of the bases that you were stationed at?

00:07:17.939 --> 00:07:44.367
Well, of course that was San Diego, philadelphia, and then we were shipyard when we took the Kitty Hawk and we were slept in a NAS Corpus Christi and, of course, native Recruiting District of Los Angeles, in Lompoc, and Santa Maria, can you think of a situation or a conflict that you may have been in where you had to kind of question what you were doing and really made you think about your service to our country?

00:07:45.369 --> 00:08:08.911
It was when I was in Somalia and went out and did some going to different little towns or little villages and talking, passing out candy to kids, and a situation where, um, a little girl lost a life because of a weapon that she pulled on.

00:08:08.911 --> 00:08:09.954
Uh like, um.

00:08:12.562 --> 00:08:16.392
And what about some of the lifelong friendships that you made serving?

00:08:16.392 --> 00:08:21.132
I'm sure you probably were in contact with some of your fellow sailors for years afterwards.

00:08:22.021 --> 00:08:32.475
Actually there was one His name was Russell Rowe, who basically followed the same path as I did, coming out of the Army going into the Navy.

00:08:32.475 --> 00:08:46.028
We met aboard the PCUs on the USS Essex in San Diego and we kind of hit it on how he was with transportation and I was with aviation.

00:08:46.028 --> 00:08:51.386
So he kept on calling me a target and I kept on calling him a ground pounder.

00:08:51.386 --> 00:08:56.892
But we followed our path basically to the USS Essex.

00:08:56.892 --> 00:09:09.171
He was with recruiting in Los Angeles and I was with NRDLA and then our last three station was at the air base in Lemoore.

00:09:09.171 --> 00:09:09.913
Oh, in.

00:09:09.932 --> 00:09:10.153
Lemoore.

00:09:10.153 --> 00:09:18.110
I was with the AIMD as a safety hazmat and ADP officer and he was with the Consolidated Brig.

00:09:19.301 --> 00:09:20.506
So how about family?

00:09:20.506 --> 00:09:25.071
You have a family that comes and visits you at the Remington.

00:09:25.511 --> 00:09:26.922
No, my son.

00:09:26.922 --> 00:09:35.754
He is now a first lieutenant at Fort Carlson with the 4th Infantry.

00:09:35.754 --> 00:09:44.394
He's married, has a little daughter, and my daughter is somewhere in Michigan.

00:09:45.480 --> 00:09:50.447
You've got some great friends here at the Remington Very warm reception when they came in this afternoon.

00:09:50.508 --> 00:10:06.770
Yeah, Part of the ambassador program where we greet new people coming on in and help them, kind of like, establish a foot in the Riverton so they're not left out alone.

00:10:06.770 --> 00:10:20.068
You know, if you need any help, give me a call, set them down with people that are basically with the same interests and stuff and then kind of get them used to it.

00:10:21.982 --> 00:10:24.591
Yeah, that's a great opportunity for you to serve others.

00:10:24.591 --> 00:10:30.625
So they have a lot of activities, obviously some good food here, but they have a lot of activities for you as well, right?

00:10:30.926 --> 00:10:37.952
Right right, one of the activities we like to do is on Thursday we go out for lunch.

00:10:37.952 --> 00:10:43.753
This week we're going to go to Sal's Restaurant, mexican restaurant in Selma.

00:10:43.753 --> 00:10:53.509
We got into Olive Garden, carol's Human IHOP, you know.

00:10:53.509 --> 00:11:01.976
Just get a little break, you know, from the life here and get on out into town.

00:11:02.200 --> 00:11:09.374
Yeah and I know you have different organizations will come in and maybe they'll have church services or you'll have school music groups come in.

00:11:09.374 --> 00:11:20.049
I've brought my jazz band here several times over the years and it's always a special moment for the students to meet new friends and also the residents here to meet the school children.

00:11:20.049 --> 00:11:27.788
So, russell, I'd like to thank you for sitting down with me this afternoon and thank you for your service to our country, and I hope you have a wonderful time at the Remington.

00:11:28.110 --> 00:11:28.572
And thank you.

00:11:30.280 --> 00:11:40.068
Our next friend that we got to meet had a wonderful time visiting with Miss Judy Finney, who is a resident at the Remington and some of you actually may remember Judy.

00:11:40.068 --> 00:11:44.602
She was a author and she has authored several books on local history.

00:11:44.602 --> 00:11:48.793
She was also a writer for the Hanford Sentinel and several other publications.

00:11:48.793 --> 00:11:49.763
Welcome to the show, judy.

00:11:49.783 --> 00:11:51.568
Well, thank you, I'm glad to be here.

00:11:52.320 --> 00:11:54.788
Judy, how long have you been a resident here at the Remington?

00:11:54.788 --> 00:11:57.424
About three weeks, about three weeks Just.

00:11:57.424 --> 00:12:01.833
New rival Russell here was probably on your greeting committee.

00:12:03.059 --> 00:12:06.506
Yeah, he was you and Mary Mary Lambert.

00:12:06.506 --> 00:12:07.028
Yeah.

00:12:07.710 --> 00:12:08.350
That's fantastic.

00:12:08.350 --> 00:12:09.740
They're taking real good care of me.

00:12:09.740 --> 00:12:10.625
That's great to hear.

00:12:10.625 --> 00:12:18.091
Judy, can you tell us a little bit about your upbringing in the local area and maybe what inspired you to become an author?

00:12:18.860 --> 00:12:42.613
Well, I was born here in the Hanford Sanitarium, where my older brother always said they should have left me, and I spent the first four years of my life in Tulare County and my parents were able to save up money to rent a small farm here in Kings County and I just lived the rest of my youth in small farms here in Kings County.

00:12:44.042 --> 00:12:46.009
So I'm going to grill you about some local history.

00:12:46.009 --> 00:12:47.240
Then you mentioned the Hanford Sanitarium.

00:12:47.240 --> 00:12:48.404
I probably won't know it.

00:12:48.404 --> 00:12:50.546
It's okay, we can work together on this.

00:12:50.546 --> 00:13:01.631
So the Hanford Sanitarium was on Irwin Street and some people confused the term sanitarium with hospital, but at that point in time hospitals were called sanitariums correct, correct.

00:13:01.631 --> 00:13:03.826
So what does it say on your birth certificate?

00:13:03.826 --> 00:13:06.785
Hanford Sanitarium, hanford Sanitarium.

00:13:06.785 --> 00:13:08.302
That's a common.

00:13:08.302 --> 00:13:09.706
I run a Facebook page called.

00:13:09.706 --> 00:13:17.105
You Might Be From Hanford, if you Remember this, and whenever a picture comes up of that building, yeah, because it was spooky looking for a long time.

00:13:17.105 --> 00:13:21.293
Yeah, it's wonderful that you have these Hanford connections.

00:13:21.293 --> 00:13:22.721
So where did you go to school?

00:13:23.462 --> 00:13:25.447
I went to Kit Carson Elementary School.

00:13:25.447 --> 00:13:33.309
I also taught there for several years and I graduated from Hanford High when there was only one high school Go Pups.

00:13:33.309 --> 00:13:37.977
And then I went to COS and Fresno State go dogs.

00:13:38.700 --> 00:13:41.570
Same here Hanford High COS, fresno State, go dogs.

00:13:42.520 --> 00:13:47.873
If they hadn't had those abilities, a lot of us would not have been able to afford colleges.

00:13:48.279 --> 00:13:51.289
Yeah, it's definitely nice to have those resources here so close to home.

00:13:51.289 --> 00:13:56.152
So when you went to college, was journalism your angle?

00:13:56.821 --> 00:13:59.190
No, I've never taken any journalism classes.

00:13:59.190 --> 00:14:07.533
I have a weird theory that if you want to really be creative or you don't want to get stuck in a box, don't take those courses.

00:14:07.533 --> 00:14:11.423
So what did you end up majoring in?

00:14:11.423 --> 00:14:16.056
I was social science, with minors in many other areas.

00:14:16.056 --> 00:14:18.211
What made you gravitate towards writing?

00:14:18.211 --> 00:14:26.738
It was always in me, I think, and I can remember my older brother writing down what I was telling him when I was about five.

00:14:27.625 --> 00:14:40.099
So let's talk about your time at the Hanford Sentinel and some of the other, maybe newspapers that you've written for, maybe people that you remember, certain events in Hanford's history that you might remember that stuck out in your mind.

00:14:40.985 --> 00:14:46.953
Well, I thought I first started writing for Pulitzer and I stayed with them until they went belly up.

00:14:46.953 --> 00:14:52.671
And then I did freelance for a lot of magazines, some of them you might know.

00:14:52.671 --> 00:15:05.225
I was a columnist for Fork Wheel and Off-Road magazine, special to the Western Artist magazine.

00:15:05.225 --> 00:15:16.912
I did a whole series on the Anasazi Native Americans for the Smithsonian and I just love writing and I have this book out.

00:15:42.205 --> 00:15:43.350
And I just love writing and I have you know, this book out.

00:15:43.350 --> 00:15:50.620
And then I have a nibble at a murder been in local stores like Walgreens or Rite Aid and you've seen these books on the display and I would encourage you to buy one of her books or Michael Seamus's or Robin Roberts.

00:15:50.620 --> 00:16:04.041
Fantastic they're great, Fantastic historians that have taken the time to share pictures and stories with us that are so important to generations to come, so that they can understand the deep appreciation that we had for history.

00:16:04.041 --> 00:16:07.784
They can get to know more about themselves through the study of local history.

00:16:07.784 --> 00:16:10.793
So you said you're researching Muscle Slew.

00:16:10.793 --> 00:16:11.996
What have you come across so far?

00:16:29.445 --> 00:16:29.826
Just about that.

00:16:29.826 --> 00:16:35.155
Beyond the terrible thing that happened there the murders it was so a media circus because the chronic from San Francisco was just taking and Mr Hearst wanted stuff that would get everybody upset.

00:16:35.155 --> 00:16:39.182
So they read his newspapers and it put this weird slant on the whole event when it wasn't all bad railroad and all good settlers.

00:16:39.182 --> 00:16:41.812
So I'm going to try to bring that out.

00:16:42.445 --> 00:16:44.452
Yeah, that would be interesting to study.

00:16:44.452 --> 00:16:58.570
We talked about how the farmers in the area and their property and it's similar to what we're experiencing now with high-speed rail the people that have experienced loss of land and just that whole thing going on.

00:16:58.570 --> 00:17:03.119
So it's great that you've taken the time to research that and do that.

00:17:03.119 --> 00:17:29.259
Your time in Hanford, maybe things that happened you know events we talked about a lot of big downtown fires on last week's episode as well what are maybe some things that stick out in your mind about going to school in Hanford or maybe, since then, events that have happened that really kind of just set your mind?

00:17:29.845 --> 00:17:40.191
Well, the fact that we are drought and flood and about every 11 years we have a good flood, drought and flood and about every 11 years we have a good flood.

00:17:40.191 --> 00:17:55.634
And also and for Sentinel may not like this, but when I was in my early teens, it took the more of the sheriff's department detectives four times to go out to really make sure that these women were dancing topless.

00:17:55.634 --> 00:18:00.469
I thought, yeah, four times.

00:18:00.469 --> 00:18:03.671
Four times, that's funny, isn't it?

00:18:04.306 --> 00:18:05.170
They got closed down.

00:18:05.471 --> 00:18:08.492
Yeah, yeah, definitely some interesting places.

00:18:08.492 --> 00:18:08.814
What else?

00:18:10.705 --> 00:18:15.238
The change of course of small farming into corporate farming.

00:18:15.238 --> 00:18:22.632
And you know, sometimes I wish we'd all go back to, you know, the small farms, but that cannot be.

00:18:22.632 --> 00:18:25.232
History continues to move on forward.

00:18:25.232 --> 00:18:34.944
But the camaraderie all the neighbors had at Christmas, everybody snuck everybody else gifts in the community, it wasn't, you know, something you require.

00:18:34.944 --> 00:18:56.200
And all the huge Christmas pageants that used to have for the city, and then the festas, the Catholic celebrations, big parades for that, and just this small town atmosphere encouraged almost everybody here in Hanford and Kings County.

00:18:56.200 --> 00:19:06.759
And you know they're really great friends and although I tend to be liberal, I find the conservatives here sometimes they do have good ideas.

00:19:06.759 --> 00:19:11.477
So we, you know, must remember that.

00:19:11.477 --> 00:19:18.035
Thank goodness for COS, I think you know, for being there to push us on into Fresno State.

00:19:18.256 --> 00:19:20.606
So yeah, Isn't it amazing?

00:19:20.606 --> 00:19:39.477
Now you're living here on 11th and Fargo and who would have thought, growing up I mean, we're talking even in my lifetime you know it ended at Cortner, you know, and years before you know farther south of Fargo for sure but isn't it amazing how much Hanford has grown over the last 20, 30 years?

00:19:39.945 --> 00:19:45.593
We farmed a small amount of land on Fargo, Just about where this stands now.

00:19:45.593 --> 00:19:51.856
You just whoa in the blink of eye, everything has changed, which it should.

00:19:52.176 --> 00:19:56.404
Yeah, it should, but I love it here and that's why I stay here.

00:19:56.404 --> 00:19:58.125
It should, but I love it here and that's why I stay here.

00:19:58.125 --> 00:20:08.211
If you get them to really believe that you are sincere in what you want to do, the people will bend over backwards to help you, sometimes even if they don't know what they're talking about.

00:20:08.211 --> 00:20:10.092
But you know, it's just fun.

00:20:10.092 --> 00:20:11.271
It's just fun.

00:20:11.271 --> 00:20:17.535
And if you can't have fun, well, I hope someday you will have fun.

00:20:18.394 --> 00:20:28.960
Well, it certainly sounds like you found a great place to meet friends and be treated well by the staff, and I'd like to thank both Russell and Judy for coming on the show today.

00:20:28.960 --> 00:20:34.843
It's been wonderful getting to meet you and I look forward to coming back and maybe you can introduce me to more of your friends here.

00:20:34.962 --> 00:20:36.323
Well, it was a pleasure for me.

00:20:44.060 --> 00:20:44.442
Thank you.

00:20:44.442 --> 00:20:49.686

The newly renovated Neighbor Bowl on Thursday as they open up their season against Fowler.

00:22:16.984 --> 00:22:22.773
