00:02:34.180 --> 00:02:44.289
And now it's time for Hanford Insider Sports with Eric Bentley, a team that picked up a win this week, taking down fellow top 10 opponent Tulare Union 33-8 on Friday.
00:02:44.289 --> 00:02:58.449
Propelled by another gritty defensive performance, the Bullpups held the Tribe scoreless in the first quarter, forcing an interception and a fumble before the offense picked up points on a rushing touchdown and converted the two-point try to take an 8-0 lead.
00:02:58.449 --> 00:03:12.569
The Tribe answered in the second quarter with a touchdown and two-point conversion of their own to tie it at eight, but the defense forced a turnover on downs and the offense turned it into points as Hanford High took a 14-8 lead into the half.
00:03:12.569 --> 00:03:26.883
The defense continued to stifle a talented Tulare Union offense in the second half, forcing two turnovers and turning the Tribe over on downs three times, while the offense kept their foot on the gas to cruise to the 33-8 victory.
00:03:26.883 --> 00:03:39.002
The Bullpups remain perfect on the season, sitting at 7-0, 2-0 in WIL play, and will take their undefeated record on the road this week as they travel to face Tulare Western on Thursday.
00:03:40.245 --> 00:03:50.353
Hanhanford West and Sierra Pacific weren't able to pick up wins last week and they'll look to bounce back on Friday as the Huskies travel to Exeter and the Golden Bears will host Selma.

As always, we like to cover as many local sports as possible, so if you have any scores or story ideas, be sure to email them to hanfordinsider at gmailcom.
00:04:00.453 --> 00:04:04.741
I'm Eric Bentley and this has been your Hanford Insider Sports Report.
00:04:11.006 --> 00:04:14.068
Our country is preparing for a huge election on November 5th.
00:04:14.068 --> 00:04:19.690
Ballots have been mailed out and some completed ballots have already been received at the Office of Elections.
00:04:19.690 --> 00:04:25.093
The local ballot includes races for Hanford City Council Districts B and C.
00:04:25.093 --> 00:04:30.658
There's also the proposed Revenue Measure H, which promises to make Hanford a better place to live.
00:04:30.658 --> 00:04:48.266
My goal for this episode is not to endorse any particular candidate but to provide my listeners with the opportunity to hear from these aspiring leaders and learn about their goals for serving our community as a City Council person.
00:04:48.266 --> 00:04:53.833
Later in the show we'll also get to hear from two members of the Revenue Measure Committee about their experiences and why they feel this revenue measure needs to pass on November 5th.
00:04:55.841 --> 00:05:03.232
Area C, which covers most of the east side of Hanford, has not had a council representative since the departure of Diane Sharp earlier this year.
00:05:03.232 --> 00:05:08.009
Running campaigns to fill that seat are Judy Scott and Nancy Howes.
00:05:08.009 --> 00:05:09.333
They join me now.
00:05:09.333 --> 00:05:16.012
Judy Scott is running for the city council seat in District C.
00:05:16.012 --> 00:05:18.869
Judy, can you give us a little bit of your background?
00:05:18.869 --> 00:05:23.072
I understand you've resided in Hanford for a few years, more than a few years.
00:05:23.072 --> 00:05:25.488
Can you tell us about your background in Hanford?
00:05:25.899 --> 00:05:27.442
Yes, we moved here.
00:05:27.442 --> 00:05:32.331
My husband and I two girls moved here in about 30 years ago.
00:05:32.331 --> 00:05:33.735
We transferred.
00:05:33.735 --> 00:05:38.071
I grew up in Modesto and so we transferred from.
00:05:38.071 --> 00:05:53.346
Both worked with California Department of Corrections, so we transferred down to Coalinga and in driving around the small towns in the area we kind of fell in love with Hanford and so that's why we settled here and we've lived here ever since?
00:05:54.560 --> 00:05:59.773
So it's 2023, 2024, and you decided to run for city council.
00:05:59.773 --> 00:06:01.427
What made you want to run for city council?
00:06:02.480 --> 00:06:20.345
I've been going to city council meetings for probably the last off and on eight years and seeing the problems, issues, the good, the bad, the ugly going on, I believe I can help the city.
00:06:20.345 --> 00:06:35.350
I believe that I can have an open dialogue with the citizens of Hanford and whether they want to tell me good things or bad things, either way I'll listen.
00:06:35.350 --> 00:06:42.088
And with my background in Department of Corrections, I think that I know how government agencies work.
00:06:42.088 --> 00:07:01.776
I know how to get around certain things, I know how to work with—actually it's working with people, getting to know the staff and getting to know the other council people and getting along with them and working with them and trying to make the best outcome for the best of the city of Hanford.
00:07:02.841 --> 00:07:05.689
So why should the residents of District C vote for you?
00:07:05.689 --> 00:07:08.949
Why do you feel you would make a good city council representative for that area?
00:07:09.540 --> 00:07:10.685
Number one I'll listen to them.
00:07:10.685 --> 00:07:16.779
Number two is, like I said before, I know my way around the city.
00:07:16.779 --> 00:07:23.353
I already know the manager, not really personally, but I've talked to him.
00:07:23.353 --> 00:07:28.132
I've talked to some of the other top managerial staff.
00:07:28.132 --> 00:07:30.648
I know the other city council people.
00:07:30.648 --> 00:07:33.769
I know what the problems are.
00:07:33.769 --> 00:07:35.906
I know what the good and the bad are.
00:07:35.906 --> 00:07:40.206
I know how to do things and what I don't know I'll learn.
00:07:41.281 --> 00:07:49.377
So if you've been to a lot of the city council meetings, you know that they talk a lot about transparency and the need for better transparency from the city government.
00:07:49.377 --> 00:07:51.706
What does transparency mean to you?
00:07:52.288 --> 00:08:05.555
So, first of all, I think we need to be able to have the citizens get their hands on things more readily, whether it be maps of the city or agendas, agenda items.
00:08:05.555 --> 00:08:14.531
I know where to go and I know where to look because I've been doing it for a little while and a lot of the city staff they say oh, it's really easy, it's right here, right here.
00:08:14.531 --> 00:08:17.968
I think they need to make it a little easier.
00:08:17.968 --> 00:08:27.723
I also think that they need to make the city council meetings and I don't want to make them longer, but sometimes they need to stop and explain.
00:08:27.723 --> 00:08:28.927
This is why we're doing this.
00:08:28.927 --> 00:08:40.000
This is one side of it, this is the other and the staff do a really good job of explaining things, but they're focused on one thing and one thing only, of getting their point across to the city council.
00:08:40.721 --> 00:08:51.508
Sometimes they need to speak to the citizens and say this is why we did it, this is, you know why we're doing it, this is where their money's coming from.
00:08:51.508 --> 00:08:54.850
Sometimes it's going so fast that you're going okay, what happened?
00:08:54.850 --> 00:09:09.745
We just going on, because a lot of times, just city citizens walking in or listening online.
00:09:09.745 --> 00:09:13.993
They have no idea what's going on and what.
00:09:13.993 --> 00:09:16.643
You know, we just spent all this money.
00:09:16.643 --> 00:09:21.092
You know where's it going Where's you know how did we get it?
00:09:21.092 --> 00:09:22.260
Those kinds of things.
00:09:22.962 --> 00:09:24.184
Yeah, that makes total sense.
00:09:24.184 --> 00:09:29.835
So, if you were elected, what are some issues that you'd like to tackle immediately?
00:09:29.835 --> 00:09:33.350
What's important to Judy Scott, a potential new council member?
00:09:34.581 --> 00:09:46.715
Well, I think two things Right off the bat public safety and whether Measure H passes or not, we still need to look at our public safety and our response times.
00:09:46.715 --> 00:09:51.750
If it doesn't pass, then we need to be creative and get some things done.
00:09:51.750 --> 00:09:55.585
My other passion are youth and youth programs.
00:09:55.585 --> 00:09:57.909
I think we need to have more youth programs.
00:09:57.909 --> 00:10:03.304
I don't really think we need to have our youth paying extra fees to use the fields.
00:10:03.304 --> 00:10:04.927
Those belong to the kids.
00:10:05.267 --> 00:10:19.071
Now, if you say, well, we need to pay for the lights, okay, you know that extra charge is fine, but the rec leagues have a hard enough time getting kids to their parents paying all this money.
00:10:19.071 --> 00:10:30.486
My grandsons I have two grandsons, they both play baseball and my daughter's on the baseball board, the youth baseball board, and I said, well, how much is it going to be this year?
00:10:30.486 --> 00:10:35.306
$165 for a kid to play, and that's maybe three months.
00:10:35.306 --> 00:10:36.629
That's a lot of money.
00:10:36.629 --> 00:10:41.511
And she said they had to raise it because the city's asking for more money.
00:10:41.511 --> 00:10:44.269
So I think we can do different.
00:10:44.269 --> 00:10:47.827
Asking for more money, so I think we can do different.
00:10:47.827 --> 00:10:50.340
I also think we need to have some more programs for kids that don't want to play baseball, softball, soccer.
00:10:50.340 --> 00:10:52.804
Maybe they want to get involved in music.
00:10:52.804 --> 00:10:54.931
Maybe they want to get involved in art.
00:10:54.931 --> 00:10:57.087
We need to have that available for them too.
00:10:58.821 --> 00:11:12.402
At a recent city council meeting the council decided to nix the roundabout at Dowdy and Seventh, but they are moving forward with the downtown improvement project and the proposed design aspects of it and fixing some of the drainage.
00:11:12.402 --> 00:11:17.133
How do you feel about the downtown project and its effects on local businesses?
00:11:18.259 --> 00:11:19.001
We've always been.
00:11:19.001 --> 00:11:20.966
That's one thing I always hear.
00:11:20.966 --> 00:11:22.630
We need to make downtown better.
00:11:22.630 --> 00:11:25.426
Look at Kingsburg, look at Visalia.
00:11:25.426 --> 00:11:27.169
We need to do that, we need to do this.
00:11:27.169 --> 00:11:28.153
We need to make it better.
00:11:28.153 --> 00:11:30.543
This is our opportunity.
00:11:30.543 --> 00:11:32.467
This is our opportunity to make it better.
00:11:32.467 --> 00:11:39.991
This is our opportunity to make it vibrant that people will want to go down to have dinner, have lunch shop.
00:11:39.991 --> 00:11:41.033
I think it'll be.
00:11:41.033 --> 00:11:45.903
I think it's a big plus and, yeah, is it going to be disruptive?
00:11:45.903 --> 00:11:46.543
Yes, it is.
00:11:46.543 --> 00:11:57.030
I know staff will make it as easy as possible for the businesses as they can, but yeah, there's going to be some disruption.
00:11:57.030 --> 00:12:00.153
But I think in the long run it's going to be a positive thing.
00:12:00.153 --> 00:12:03.095
I think in the long run it's going to be a lot better.
00:12:03.095 --> 00:12:04.475
People are going to love it.
00:12:04.475 --> 00:12:06.557
They're going to have more people downtown.
00:12:08.039 --> 00:12:21.875
So I'm sure your message is going to resonate with a lot of my listeners, and if they are in your court and they feel like you're the best person to represent Area C, how can they get in touch with you to maybe put up a yard sign or contribute to your campaign?
00:12:22.576 --> 00:12:24.538
I have a Gmail account.
00:12:24.538 --> 00:12:34.371
It's electjudyscott at gmailcom or you can call me 559-381-1560.
00:12:34.371 --> 00:12:38.001
I will come put a sign in your yard, talk to you.
00:12:38.001 --> 00:12:41.692
If you have questions for me, feel free to call in and talk to me.
00:12:42.639 --> 00:12:45.684
Thank you very much for joining us and I wish you the best of luck in your campaign.
00:12:46.025 --> 00:12:47.227
Thank you so much for having me.
00:12:49.491 --> 00:12:54.086
Nancy Howes is a local resident in District C who is running for city council.
00:12:54.086 --> 00:12:55.067
Welcome to the show, Nancy.
00:12:55.789 --> 00:12:56.431
Thank you.
00:12:56.431 --> 00:12:57.643
Thank you for having me.
00:12:58.205 --> 00:13:05.801
Nancy, can you tell us a little bit about your background in Hanford and maybe what brought you to Hanford and just a short background of your family?
00:13:06.503 --> 00:13:07.346
Yeah, absolutely.
00:13:07.346 --> 00:13:11.096
We moved here when I was in first grade in 1986.
00:13:11.096 --> 00:13:14.985
We lived in the Bay Area and my dad moved here for work.
00:13:14.985 --> 00:13:19.980
So we moved and I've lived here until I lived in Hanford till I was 18.
00:13:19.980 --> 00:13:32.754
And then I went to college, I went to Chico State and I lived elsewhere afterwards and worked and then moved back in 2004 and got married to my husband, dusty, in 2005.
00:13:32.754 --> 00:13:43.231
And I worked for a large corporation at the time as a sales rep and worked in had a large territory, basically from almost Modesto all the way to Larry.
00:13:43.231 --> 00:13:48.807
And then Dusty and I started a family in 2017, and we have three boys.
00:13:48.807 --> 00:13:55.447
Our oldest is 16, our middle son's 12, and our youngest is nine, and Dusty was also married before.
00:13:55.447 --> 00:14:03.768
So we have two children from his previous marriage, who was 30 and just turned 28 the other day, and we have two grandbabies, two girls.
00:14:03.768 --> 00:14:07.009
So we are a big blended family.
00:14:11.344 --> 00:14:15.332
So what gave you the idea or the motivation to run for city council?
00:14:15.980 --> 00:14:20.191
Well, I started getting more interested in politics about three years ago.
00:14:20.191 --> 00:14:24.530
I just found it was easier to have time to actually read anything because my kids were getting older.
00:14:24.530 --> 00:14:42.328
And then I got more interested in local politics and government the last year and I started watching the meetings online and I'd go to a few as well the city council meetings and I just thought there was some things that could be improved upon and I kind of thought, well, you know, somebody will come along and do it.
00:14:42.328 --> 00:14:42.830
I thought what?
00:14:42.830 --> 00:14:45.085
Maybe nobody is, maybe I should do it.
00:14:45.085 --> 00:14:50.633
And my son actually my oldest son, who's 16, he said he's been my biggest cheerleader.
00:14:50.633 --> 00:14:53.649
He was like Mom, you'd be really, really good at this.
00:14:53.649 --> 00:14:55.726
I think you should do this.
00:14:55.726 --> 00:14:58.188
And so I just started doing it.
00:14:58.188 --> 00:15:00.447
I've just been taking it one day at a time, step by step.
00:15:06.100 --> 00:15:07.144
And I put my name in the hat, so we'll see.
00:15:07.144 --> 00:15:12.160
November 5th is just around the corner and I know a lot of people are wondering who to vote for and why should citizens in District C vote for Nancy House?
00:15:13.024 --> 00:15:13.586
Great question.
00:15:13.586 --> 00:15:26.142
I think that people in District C, citizens in District C, should vote for me because I want to bring respect back to city council and its residents, and or the constituents of Hanford is a better way of putting that.
00:15:26.142 --> 00:15:34.505
I feel like currently there's a little bit of a lack of respect from the council towards the city and I don't like that at all.
00:15:34.505 --> 00:15:45.192
I want to really bring back respect, civility, transparency, decisions and resources resources aligning with the communities and wants and needs.
00:15:45.192 --> 00:15:48.708
I think we saw with the roundabout when that wasn't happening.
00:15:48.708 --> 00:15:52.428
That obviously got me interested as well in running.
00:15:52.428 --> 00:15:54.576
I'm very interested in supporting public safety.
00:15:54.576 --> 00:15:59.770
I've actually gone on a ride along, spent all day last Thursday with Hanford Fire Department.
00:15:59.770 --> 00:16:01.441
I posted about that on social media.
00:16:01.441 --> 00:16:03.403
I really enjoyed myself and learned a lot.
00:16:03.403 --> 00:16:13.307
And then I also went on a ride along with one of our HART officers and I'm going to do more of an action-packed ride along on a weekend night with Hanford PD.
00:16:13.307 --> 00:16:16.783
But anyway, I'm really getting out there and I want to learn.
00:16:16.903 --> 00:16:22.763
I told at the 1776 meeting I said I'm in information gathering mode right now.
00:16:22.763 --> 00:16:31.471
I want to learn as much as I can about each public safety entity and just basically everything I want to learn about Main Street, downtown Hanford.
00:16:31.471 --> 00:16:32.162
I want to really.
00:16:32.162 --> 00:16:33.686
So I'm talking to everybody.
00:16:33.686 --> 00:16:35.289
I'm talking to every city council member.
00:16:35.289 --> 00:16:36.942
I talk to Mario Cifuentes.
00:16:36.942 --> 00:16:50.822
I just want to kind of learn as much as I can so that if I am lucky enough to get elected then I can make good decisions and I can obviously continue to learn more and I'll be privy to more information if I were to be elected.
00:16:50.822 --> 00:16:52.427
But I kind of went off track.
00:16:52.427 --> 00:16:52.969
Sorry about that.
00:16:53.571 --> 00:17:07.561
I think I am a great candidate for it because I am somebody who's able to take a lot of information in and then digest it and then kind of figure out what is the best fit and I want to listen to other people.
00:17:07.561 --> 00:17:10.592
I don't have a huge agenda at all.
00:17:10.592 --> 00:17:11.233
I don't.
00:17:11.233 --> 00:17:16.968
Being in city council isn't going to make my life or my business any better than it is my life's.
00:17:17.489 --> 00:17:39.364
I'm very lucky, but I want to be able to make impartial decisions, like listen to people and make decisions based on the information, the facts, information I learn, and then listening to the people of Hanford with respect and civility and curiosity and actually really listening with the intent to understand, not just listening to feel.
00:17:39.364 --> 00:17:43.964
There's a feeling of superiority right now and I just don't like that.
00:17:43.964 --> 00:17:59.681
I want everybody in Hanford to feel like we're all on the same, because we're all on the same team and we all want what's best for Hanford, and we spend a lot of time, money, resources and energy wasted being just in negativity and kind of caught up in the wrong stuff, and I don't.
00:17:59.681 --> 00:18:04.553
I want to get rid of that so we can actually work and get things done, because it's hard.
00:18:04.553 --> 00:18:05.664
We have a big job.
00:18:05.664 --> 00:18:10.053
It's hard enough, we don't need to add to it is my point.
00:18:10.193 --> 00:18:11.738
You mentioned earlier.
00:18:11.738 --> 00:18:15.308
You mentioned transparency and that's one of the things that I'm asking all the candidates.
00:18:15.308 --> 00:18:17.644
That seems to be a hot topic among the citizens.
00:18:17.644 --> 00:18:20.392
What does transparency on city council mean to you?
00:18:22.000 --> 00:18:24.184
Transparency means to me is honesty.
00:18:24.184 --> 00:18:28.681
If, if you have nothing to hide, put it all out there.
00:18:28.681 --> 00:18:32.270
I want information to be more easy to access.
00:18:32.270 --> 00:18:43.724
Sometimes I feel like not very bright when I'm dealing with city websites and things of that nature, because it's just not as user friendly as like websites that we're used to using in our day to day life.
00:18:43.724 --> 00:18:47.089
I feel like more commercial websites.
00:18:47.089 --> 00:18:51.520
Anyway, I feel like it would just be nice to have that information easier to find.
00:18:51.560 --> 00:18:54.608
Right now, the onus to find the information is on the constituent.
00:18:54.608 --> 00:18:58.851
I want us and if there's in a way we can get more interaction via social media.
00:18:58.851 --> 00:19:01.820
Obviously, with civility and respect, there's rules.
00:19:01.820 --> 00:19:05.287
You can have Facebook groups that have rules, Like you know.
00:19:05.287 --> 00:19:17.125
I understand, like right now city council pardon me, the city of Hanford you're not allowed to comment on their Facebook posts and things of that nature.
00:19:17.125 --> 00:19:18.147
So I think that could help with some transparency.
00:19:18.167 --> 00:19:20.394
Just being more open in general with these are the facts.
00:19:20.394 --> 00:19:24.065
These are why we're making decisions, Like, for instance, with the roundabouts.
00:19:24.065 --> 00:19:32.623
If there was really good information and facts and figures as to why they were a great idea, why weren't they more forthcoming with that?
00:19:32.623 --> 00:19:48.565
Why didn't they say like these are the reasons why and like, lay out a bunch of reasons and the facts and figures, and, unless I miss something, I never saw that and I feel like that's transparency, saying look, and I think a lot of times it's going to be, here's our choices.
00:19:48.826 --> 00:19:51.152
Neither one's super great, but these are.
00:19:51.152 --> 00:19:52.863
This is all the informational choice A.
00:19:52.863 --> 00:19:54.647
This is all their informational choice B.
00:19:54.647 --> 00:20:01.412
What do you think if we could restructure the times and the way the meeting works where public comment can be after?
00:20:01.412 --> 00:20:18.766
That would be another awesome thing thing, because then people could then put in their feedback on A and B and then you can kind of see, I feel like we've kind of put the cart before the horse, because it seems like we put a lot of money and time and effort into a project before we even know if we want to do it.
00:20:18.766 --> 00:20:28.528
With the roundabouts I believe don't quote me I think it's around $400,000 we've spent thus far, but we're not doing it or we're doing some modicum of it.
00:20:28.528 --> 00:20:34.195
But anyhow, it just seems like if there was ways that we could figure this out sooner.
00:20:35.480 --> 00:20:38.384
Yeah, I totally agree and that's a common theme.
00:20:38.384 --> 00:20:49.236
If you are elected on November 5th and take office in January, what are one or two things that you feel like you want to just get right to and have an impact on the community?
00:20:50.180 --> 00:20:58.387
Well, the most amazing thing would be if Measure H passes as well, because then we will have more money to do those things, because it would be public safety right away.
00:20:58.387 --> 00:21:12.567
And I would want to start with actually hiring more firefighters and more police, start with actual staff, start with actually hiring more firefighters and more police, start with actual staff, because I think that sounds like, if I'm understanding everything I'm learning correctly, that that would be the priority.
00:21:12.567 --> 00:21:16.201
I really am very interested in an animal control officer.
00:21:16.201 --> 00:21:17.365
We have one currently.
00:21:17.365 --> 00:21:24.646
It is not enough and I know the public is very on the same page with me on that one.
00:21:25.009 --> 00:21:28.685
I obviously started that by saying if Measure H passes, that's what I want to do.
00:21:28.685 --> 00:21:33.846
I mean, obviously I want to find a way to do that either way, whether it passes or it doesn't pass.
00:21:33.846 --> 00:21:41.871
I think it'll be easier, obviously if it passes, and we might have to be more creative and a little harder do some digging if it doesn't.
00:21:41.871 --> 00:21:44.326
But nonetheless, those are my priorities.
00:21:44.326 --> 00:21:45.990
And to learn.
00:21:45.990 --> 00:21:47.642
I'm going to be really realistic.
00:21:47.642 --> 00:21:48.584
I need to learn.
00:21:48.584 --> 00:21:52.873
I've never done this, but I want to do a damn good job.
00:21:52.873 --> 00:22:01.943
So I know it's going to take me time to learn and I want to learn exactly all the procedures, the Brown Act, everything.
00:22:01.943 --> 00:22:08.605
I've got some really great people mentoring me who are going to make sure that I learn how to do the job correctly.
00:22:09.689 --> 00:22:11.251
So I asked my listeners, nancy.
00:22:11.251 --> 00:22:15.007
I asked them what would you like to know from the city council candidates?
00:22:15.007 --> 00:22:20.851
What are their views on certain topics that have really been in the news lately?
00:22:20.851 --> 00:22:21.953
And the Hidden Valley.
00:22:21.953 --> 00:22:30.792
Completion of the 18 acres of the undeveloped parkland is definitely something that the community wants, but there's not money there yet.
00:22:30.792 --> 00:22:33.355
How do you view the Hidden Valley expansion project?
00:22:35.002 --> 00:22:37.873
and very much for the Hidden Valley Expansion Project.
00:22:37.873 --> 00:22:41.805
I believe this is something that's been in the talks for about 18 years.
00:22:41.805 --> 00:22:44.230
I think we need to really move forward with it.
00:22:44.230 --> 00:22:56.846
I actually even just was driving I had some extra time the other day when my son was at piano and I was driving around there and just actually looking at it and really reacquainting myself with that space and I thought, wow, what are we doing?
