00:00:00.441 --> 00:00:09.675
On this week's episode of the Insider, Rob will take a look back at the Hanford City Council actions last week and what's on the agenda for this week.
00:00:09.675 --> 00:00:19.015
We'll also see what's on the community calendar, including a preview of the Juneteenth celebration at the Longfield Center this Saturday.
00:00:19.015 --> 00:00:23.902
This is the Hanford Insider for Monday, June 10th.
00:00:42.814 --> 00:00:45.957
Hey everybody, welcome to this episode of the Hanford Insider.
00:00:45.957 --> 00:00:47.237
I'm your host, rob Bentley.
00:00:47.237 --> 00:00:52.220
Thanks for listening.
00:00:52.220 --> 00:00:55.070
The weather this week is going to be very warm again, with temperatures in the high 90s to low 100s.
00:00:55.070 --> 00:01:00.710
It was so great to see so many of you at the Carnegie Museum of Kings County Car Show in downtown Hanford on Saturday.
00:01:00.710 --> 00:01:07.563
It was a fantastic show that drew over 200 entries and visitors from all over Central California.
00:01:07.563 --> 00:01:11.391
On behalf of the museum, I'd like to thank all of those of you who came out.
00:01:11.391 --> 00:01:14.349
This really is becoming a fun new annual event.
00:01:15.653 --> 00:01:23.382
In community news, the Hanford City Council met last Tuesday and appointed Martin Devine to fill the remaining term of departing Council Member Kalish Morrow.
00:01:23.382 --> 00:01:32.043
This week the Council will meet once again, but this time the agenda item is the proposed revenue measure that could potentially be placed on the November ballot.
00:01:32.043 --> 00:01:40.531
The Council has to decide if the measure should be placed on the ballot and if it is the next steps towards getting the word out about the need for it.
00:01:40.531 --> 00:01:44.510
I'll be up front with you and I'll let you know that I am in full support of the measure.
00:01:44.510 --> 00:01:50.582
I believe it will improve the quality of life in Hanford.
00:01:50.582 --> 00:01:51.484
You'll get your chance to vote in November.
00:01:51.484 --> 00:01:55.111

00:04:28.976 --> 00:04:30.403
Doing good?
00:04:30.403 --> 00:04:31.067
Thank you, rob.
00:04:31.067 --> 00:04:37.853
Got a special celebration coming up this Saturday at the Longfield Center with the Juneteenth Community Celebration.
00:04:37.853 --> 00:04:43.091
Can you tell us a little bit about the origins of the Juneteenth and why it's important to celebrate?
00:04:43.913 --> 00:04:45.918
of the Juneteenth and why it's important to celebrate.
00:04:45.918 --> 00:04:56.353
Okay, so the origin basically of Juneteenth is when the Emancipation Proclamation was passed by Abraham Lincoln in what 1863.
00:04:56.353 --> 00:05:02.168
But the people in Galveston, texas, didn't know anything about being free.
00:05:02.168 --> 00:05:13.711
So General Gordon Granger came in 1865, but two and a half years later to tell these people that they were free from slavery.
00:05:13.711 --> 00:05:18.435
So that became a celebration at that time.
00:05:18.435 --> 00:05:22.970
When they did find out but it wasn't real pretty like oh, we're free, we're gone.
00:05:22.970 --> 00:05:28.730
No, some of them got shot, some of them got hung and some of them were brought back to their plantation.
00:05:29.641 --> 00:05:33.211
But as a whole, a lot of them were freed at that time.
00:05:33.211 --> 00:05:39.911
And when they found out that they were free, they did have a big celebration, a jubilee about being free.
00:05:39.911 --> 00:05:49.226
So a lot of them went out to different states in the South looking for their loved ones because they had been separated.
00:05:49.226 --> 00:06:02.966
So that became a time of like a family, a family reunion, and that's basically how family reunions even got started amongst the Black people down South started family reunions because they were looking for their loved ones.
00:06:02.966 --> 00:06:23.437
So at that time in 1865, it became basically a holiday, a day of jubilee, a day of celebration, a day of eating, a day of rejoicing, a day of activities for kids, just a lot of fun and happy times at that time in 1865.
00:06:23.437 --> 00:06:32.507
And it was actually it was on the 19th of June when Grazer came to Texas to tell them that they were free.
00:06:32.507 --> 00:06:38.728
So, actually being June 19th, they shorted up to Juneteenth the Juneteenth celebration.
00:06:39.795 --> 00:06:44.507
So, Paula, why do you think it's important for us to recognize and celebrate Juneteenth?
00:06:45.475 --> 00:06:56.290
Because it's like it's a holiday and we're standing in unity with those that thought they were free but were not really free.
00:06:56.290 --> 00:07:10.851
And also, when Carol was talking, there were other states, there were other towns not even in Texas that had slaves that were still working, thought they were still slaves.
00:07:10.851 --> 00:07:11.956
They didn't know they were free.
00:07:11.956 --> 00:07:34.716
So, from what I'm understanding is, galveston, texas, was the last drop, last stop, to let the people know hey, y'all been free for two years, but prior to that, granger and a lot of the black soldiers that were riding with him went to other states and other cities to tell them you're free, yeah.
00:07:34.716 --> 00:07:42.300
So I think it was important to know, because if we don't know this stuff, how can we just share it with other people?
00:07:42.802 --> 00:07:47.920
And we know that in our schools they banned a lot of books.
00:07:47.920 --> 00:07:53.392
They banned a lot of the history from what we need to know.
00:07:53.392 --> 00:08:13.521
I didn't know about I'm 66 years old, I didn't know about Juneteenth until maybe 2010 yeah, 2010 and went to a celebration in Vegas not Vegas, but Phoenix, arizona and saw how they were doing it.
00:08:13.521 --> 00:08:17.685
Really didn't care for it, but this is how they celebrated.
00:08:17.685 --> 00:08:31.944
So we decided that you know, we're going to do something here and, like I don't know whether Carolyn already said it, we had a young lady, a senior citizen, who kept asking us about doing Juneteenth and we decided this is the year that we need to do it.
00:08:32.104 --> 00:08:41.940
Yeah, this is the year to do it because, for the first time, we'll be celebrating Juneteenth, with it being made a federal holiday in 2021.
00:08:41.940 --> 00:08:45.817
This is our first opportunity to actually celebrate it as a federal holiday.
00:08:45.817 --> 00:08:52.318
Carolyn, can you tell us about the event that's coming up on Saturday and some of the things that are happening?
00:08:52.318 --> 00:08:54.868
I understand you're having music, food vendors, kidzone.
00:08:54.868 --> 00:08:56.433
It's at the Longfield Center.
00:08:56.433 --> 00:08:57.395
It should be a great day.
00:08:58.138 --> 00:09:01.144
Yeah, I think it'll be a fantastic day.
00:09:01.144 --> 00:09:03.649
I mean, the city, we partied with the city.
00:09:03.649 --> 00:09:04.778
They're working with us.
00:09:04.778 --> 00:09:15.924
They're actually blocking off the street, which is huge, so that we won't have traffic coming through back and forth down Dowdy, and we're going to use both sides.
00:09:15.924 --> 00:09:18.924
We're going to have the coal park side is going to be the kids zone.
00:09:18.924 --> 00:09:20.980
The law field center side.
00:09:20.980 --> 00:09:23.787
We'll have our band playing.
00:09:23.787 --> 00:09:25.239
High sight will be playing.
00:09:25.239 --> 00:09:31.066
We'll have our food vendors, our informational vendors, craft vendors.
00:09:31.436 --> 00:09:34.121
We're going to have a peach cobbler contest.
00:09:34.121 --> 00:09:36.086
Oh yeah, yes.
00:09:36.086 --> 00:09:46.381
So everybody's hyped up for the peach cobbler contest Because they sit there on the fly like, oh yeah, I'll be there just for the peach cobbler, but we'll have that.
00:09:46.381 --> 00:09:48.884
We'll have a spades and domino contest.
00:09:48.884 --> 00:09:50.961
Oh my God.
00:09:50.961 --> 00:10:05.381
We have jump rope, double dutch, all those good things that kids used to do, Sack races, all kind of double dutch, if I didn't already say double dutch.
00:10:05.381 --> 00:10:15.567
They're going to also have the big giant Connect Four pieces, Just all kind of.
00:10:15.567 --> 00:10:23.082
I think it's a dunk tank, so we dunk somebody dodge ball.
00:10:23.082 --> 00:10:26.850
It's just going to be a day full of fun, I mean.
00:10:26.850 --> 00:10:31.878
And it's a community, a community of celebration for everyone.
00:10:32.698 --> 00:10:37.962
Can you highlight some of the vendors that you're going to have there with food and some of the different stuff that's going to be out there?
00:10:39.224 --> 00:10:51.032
Yes, we have Jefferson Hot Wings will be there and they'll be serving up some delicious plates of barbecue or chicken and hot links, possibly ribs.
00:10:51.032 --> 00:10:57.243
But we also have fish.
00:10:57.243 --> 00:11:04.716
We're going to have fish fry, gosh we're going to have.
00:11:04.716 --> 00:11:13.011
We're also going to have Valley Voices is going to be there and they're going to be administrating the COVID information and administering COVID shots, vaccines for those boosters.
00:11:13.011 --> 00:11:20.570
So if anyone needs to have a booster or the shot, they can go to that booth.
00:11:20.570 --> 00:11:29.985
They will give them a $50 card gift card and also a plate of food from Jefferson Hot Wings.
00:11:29.985 --> 00:11:34.289
So that will come along with just signing up and getting a shot.
00:11:34.289 --> 00:11:43.346
They also need, if they could bring their shot record or their shot card from the COVID and then that'll kind of cut down on the time for them to look it up.
00:11:43.346 --> 00:11:46.144
So that's a big thing a $50 gift card.
00:11:46.144 --> 00:11:50.086
I was like, yeah, that's a good incentive That'll pay the fee.
00:11:50.086 --> 00:11:52.823
So we got that going on as well.
00:11:52.823 --> 00:11:54.822
So it should be a good time all around.
00:11:54.875 --> 00:11:59.147
And, like I said, the educational part we're also going to have free kids books.
00:11:59.147 --> 00:12:08.244
We got books that we just want to make sure it gets in the hands of these kids because literacy is so important and that's one of the things that our organization does.
00:12:08.244 --> 00:12:11.144
We push reading, the literacy part.
00:12:11.144 --> 00:12:17.057
You know we got kids graduating from junior high, high school, that can you know.
00:12:17.057 --> 00:12:24.225
They're not up to par on their reading level, so we want to always make sure we have some books just to give to them for free, no problem.
00:12:24.225 --> 00:12:30.605
The most important part about it, rob, is actually the educational part, because we don't know.
00:12:30.605 --> 00:12:32.409
Uh, you know we.
00:12:32.409 --> 00:12:35.378
We just weren't raised, especially in california.
00:12:35.378 --> 00:12:37.302
We weren't raised with having to.
00:12:37.302 --> 00:12:43.616
I've been to juneteenth celebrations in los angeles, fresno, tulare, allensworth.
00:12:43.616 --> 00:12:45.337
I've been to all those.
00:12:45.337 --> 00:12:47.980
Now hampton is the county seat.
00:12:47.980 --> 00:12:52.552
We need to have our own celebration right here in Kings County.
00:12:52.552 --> 00:12:54.005
I've been to all the other ones.
00:12:54.005 --> 00:12:56.489
Let's have our own right here in Alvord.
00:12:56.489 --> 00:12:58.985
So I'm excited.
00:12:59.904 --> 00:13:00.700
That's amazing.
00:13:00.700 --> 00:13:03.927
It sounds like an amazing event and I know the community is going to come out strong.
00:13:03.927 --> 00:13:17.505
Hopefully we'll have some cool weather for you, and I want to take this opportunity to thank Paula, and you, carolyn, for all the work that you do in the community to advocate for the Black community in the Kings County area.
00:13:17.505 --> 00:13:40.280
I know we had the Carnegie Museum exhibit back a year or so ago and it was very successful and I learned a lot and I thank you for the years of work that both of you have put in and I especially am excited for this event coming up on Saturday and if you need any more information about it, you can check the Hanford Insider social media and I'll be posting the flyer and you can.
00:13:40.280 --> 00:13:44.272
If you subscribe to my newsletter, you'll also get a copy of the flyer as well.
00:13:44.272 --> 00:13:49.927
So once again, carolyn and Paula, thank you so much for coming on the show and I hope you have a wonderful event on Saturday.
00:13:50.740 --> 00:13:51.322
Thank you.
00:13:51.322 --> 00:13:52.586
Thank you, Rob, for having us.
00:13:52.586 --> 00:13:53.408
We appreciate it.
00:13:57.181 --> 00:13:59.208
Well, that's all the time we have for this week's show.
00:13:59.208 --> 00:14:07.679
