00:00:00.341 --> 00:00:16.908
On this week's episode of the Hanford Insider, we'll hear from Carol Fleming about this year's Operation Christmas Blessing, Then Leandra Dupree stopped by to let us know about the new Christmas light decorating contest in Kings County, and later I'll be back with your sports report.
00:00:16.908 --> 00:00:21.021
This is the Hanford Insider for Monday, December 2nd.
00:00:38.768 --> 00:00:48.192
This is the Hanford Insider, the podcast where we dive into what makes our community tick, from local stories and hidden gems to conversations with the people shaping our neighborhoods.
00:00:48.192 --> 00:00:51.014
We're here to celebrate, explore and connect.

Whether you're new to Hanford or a longtime local, this is your source for everything happening in our town, from events and news to unique conversations with people who make Hanford what it is.
00:01:02.118 --> 00:01:07.468
Thanks for tuning in and let's jump right into this week's community news.
00:01:07.468 --> 00:01:11.260
What an amazing turnout it was for the Hanford Christmas Parade on Friday night.
00:01:11.260 --> 00:01:14.132
It was so nice to see so much community spirit.
00:01:14.132 --> 00:01:22.302
Thanks to the volunteers at the Hanford Chamber of Commerce for sponsoring this event, which undoubtedly is the largest event in town each year.
00:01:22.302 --> 00:01:35.391
I was reviewing the agenda for the City of Hanford Site Plan Review Committee meeting on Wednesday and it looks like they'll get their first look at the site map for the new subdivision being planned at the northeast corner of 12th and Fargo.
00:01:35.391 --> 00:01:46.332
The City of Hanford has put out a call for local artists to participate in the Downtown Mural Program and help create spaces that inspire, engage and unite our community.
00:01:46.332 --> 00:01:50.911
For more information, visit the City of Hanford website at hanfordcity.
00:01:50.911 --> 00:01:52.001

For more information, email misskingscountyorg at gmailcom.
00:02:22.912 --> 00:02:23.954
It's the season of giving.
00:02:23.954 --> 00:02:27.923
So many local organizations are sponsoring special collection drives.
00:02:27.923 --> 00:02:29.228
Here are just a few.
00:02:29.228 --> 00:02:35.828
Kings County Child Support Services is holding their annual Slipper Sock Drive for the senior citizens of Kings County.
00:02:35.828 --> 00:02:42.096
Any slipper sock that has a skid-proof bottom and is one size all can be donated through December 10th.
00:02:42.096 --> 00:02:51.944
There are several drop-off locations in town, including one of our great supporters of the Hanford Insider Cornerstone Cafe in the Fast Plaza.
00:02:51.944 --> 00:02:57.723
Gold Standard Mortgage is sponsoring a Santa for Seniors for local nursing homes and retirement communities in our area.
00:02:57.723 --> 00:03:01.372
Donations can be dropped off at 115 West 7th Street.
00:03:01.372 --> 00:03:07.141
The Hanford Fire Department is having a toy drive at Fire Station no 1 on Grangeville Boulevard.
00:03:07.141 --> 00:03:10.150
The toy giveaway will be held on December 21st.
00:03:10.210 --> 00:03:16.651
At the Longfield Center, the Itchy Pooch is holding a holiday pet pantry food drive through Christmas Day.
00:03:16.651 --> 00:03:20.669
All donations will be delivered to the Kings County Animal Services.
00:03:20.669 --> 00:03:29.769
Your donations of pet food are being collected at 324 West Cortner or you can text for pickup at 824-1380.
00:03:29.769 --> 00:03:34.640
Another great opportunity to give this season is Operation Christmas Blessing.
00:03:34.640 --> 00:03:43.026
This organization began as a kind gesture by one family to another over 30 years ago and has grown to serve hundreds of local families.
00:03:43.026 --> 00:03:52.123
This organization works with the Hanford Elementary School District and Kings County Community Action to provide Christmas presents to deserving families.
00:03:52.123 --> 00:03:56.502
Kara Fleming joins me now to tell us about the needs that they have for this year.
00:03:56.502 --> 00:03:58.145
Welcome to the show, kara.
00:03:59.467 --> 00:04:01.131
Hi, hi, thank you for having me.
00:04:01.131 --> 00:04:06.590
So this year we are hoping to bless 600 children.
00:04:06.590 --> 00:04:26.983
As you said, we work with Hanford Elementary School and Kings County Action Organization to find our families that are in need, and we work with lots of people in the community and businesses and people that are interested and work together to provide Christmas for kiddos that otherwise wouldn't have a Christmas.
00:04:26.983 --> 00:04:30.713
So that's our goal, that's our passion.
00:04:31.720 --> 00:04:33.367
So how can people support this event?
00:04:34.100 --> 00:04:35.983
There's lots of ways that you can support.
00:04:35.983 --> 00:04:39.110
I have people that just purchase toys.
00:04:39.110 --> 00:04:43.331
I have people that like to purchase jackets and socks and shoes.
00:04:43.331 --> 00:04:47.726
Part of what we do is we like to provide the needs of the children.
00:04:47.726 --> 00:04:56.112
Obviously, they get toys as well, but we really like to also focus on if they need jackets and shoes and winter clothes or blankets and things like that.
00:04:56.112 --> 00:04:57.343
We like to provide those as well.
00:04:57.343 --> 00:05:02.303
So I have lots of people that like to shop for those kinds of items and donate them.
00:05:02.704 --> 00:05:08.242
We also have people that want to just sponsor a child, and they can.
00:05:08.242 --> 00:05:10.927
We have various ways that they can do that.
00:05:10.927 --> 00:05:16.204
It's $50 sponsors a child and that provides all you know everything for them.
00:05:16.204 --> 00:05:22.985
And then we have other people that we really would love to adopt a child, and by that I mean they.
00:05:22.985 --> 00:05:39.173
I get them basic information for the child and what their needs are and what their wish lists are, and they go out and shop for them and shop and wrap and bring it back to me and then I get things to the organizations to get taken out to the kiddos.
00:05:39.173 --> 00:05:41.305
So there's lots of ways.
00:05:41.305 --> 00:05:50.387
Really, honestly, no donation is too small, whether it's a singular toy or a cash donation or a jacket or a packet of socks.
00:05:50.387 --> 00:05:59.360
Everything helps, and if it wasn't for the generous donations from the amazing people in our community, we couldn't bless as many kids as we do.
00:06:00.362 --> 00:06:07.194
So if somebody wanted to get involved whether it's maybe donating or maybe even helping wrap presents and deliver them how can they get ahold of you?
00:06:07.939 --> 00:06:12.771
We have a flyer on Facebook and it has, or on Instagram as well.
00:06:12.771 --> 00:06:16.728
We do have a Facebook page Operation.
00:06:16.728 --> 00:06:18.593
You can just look up Operation Christmas Blessing.
00:06:18.593 --> 00:06:23.151
My personal phone number is on the flyer because I am the I'm in charge.
00:06:23.151 --> 00:06:26.641
We are also an official nonprofit, so we have a.
00:06:26.641 --> 00:06:43.403
We have a tax ID number, so that's been super handy for a lot of our bigger organizations that like to participate, that we have that as well and I, yeah, we have the flyer and my, my phone number is on there so you can get ahold of me and and we can work out what what capacity you'd like to participate.
00:06:44.165 --> 00:06:48.723
I will also link that flyer on my post on my social media as well.
00:06:48.723 --> 00:06:55.889
Kara, thank you for joining us, and we thank you for all that you and your friends have done with the Operation Christmas Blessing.
00:06:55.889 --> 00:07:00.624
One question that I did not get a chance to ask you is how long have you been doing this?
00:07:01.887 --> 00:07:13.298
Oh gosh, my husband and I started doing this a little over 30 years ago, just a family or two at a time each year, and then one year we got a mom of eight kiddos.
00:07:13.298 --> 00:07:17.488
That just had such a great need that we weren't going to be able to fill it all ourselves.
00:07:17.488 --> 00:07:25.050
So we decided to reach out to some friends here in Hanford and got such an amazing response.
00:07:25.050 --> 00:07:28.322
And one of my friends said hey, why don't you do this every year?
00:07:28.322 --> 00:07:31.168
We would love to join with you and do this.
00:07:31.168 --> 00:07:34.040
And so it really, honestly, has just grown from there.
00:07:34.040 --> 00:07:40.201
And it went from, you know, maybe eight or 10 kids to then 50 and so on and so on.
00:07:40.201 --> 00:07:45.011
And now here we are working with big organizations and, you know, supporting Big Thunder Kid.
00:07:45.872 --> 00:07:46.795
That's fantastic.
00:07:48.103 --> 00:07:49.127
So 30 years and counting.
00:07:49.360 --> 00:07:53.744
Well, great job, cara, and thank you for joining us, and we wish you a very Merry Christmas.
00:07:54.547 --> 00:07:55.449
Absolutely you as well.
00:07:55.449 --> 00:07:56.091
Thank you so much.
00:08:03.165 --> 00:08:05.269

Send your information to hamperinsider at gmailcom.
00:10:48.398 --> 00:10:52.988
Be sure to subscribe to my weekly newsletter to get a complete calendar of events.
00:10:52.988 --> 00:11:11.206
For nearly 10 years I regularly put together a list of houses decorating the yards for Christmas so that we could have an organized way of looking at all of the displays.
00:11:11.206 --> 00:11:20.003
Last year, after starting this podcast, I realized that I needed to let others step forward to organize this annual event so that I could focus on the show.
00:11:20.003 --> 00:11:28.107
I put out the call and last year Christmas Lights of Hanford became Hanford Holiday on Facebook and Candace Blackburn volunteered to organize it.
00:11:28.107 --> 00:11:31.321
Candace joins me now to fill us in about Hanford Holiday.
00:11:32.884 --> 00:11:34.005
Thank you for having me.
00:11:34.005 --> 00:11:37.899
I'm excited to share our site with everybody listening.
00:11:38.660 --> 00:11:44.418
So tell us a little bit about Hanford Holiday and how it got started, and maybe some of the features of your program.
00:11:45.623 --> 00:11:56.869
Okay, well, so, as you know, you last year decided to dedicate more time to your podcast, and so you were asking if anybody wanted to step up and kind of take it over.
00:11:56.869 --> 00:12:02.467
And I thought about it and thought about it and I thought, you know, maybe it's something I can do.
00:12:02.467 --> 00:12:22.491
And so coming up with the name Hanford Holiday was the first step, and we decided on that name because hopefully, our end goal one day is to allow the residents to post all of their holiday decorations, not just Christmas.
00:12:22.491 --> 00:12:35.008
Halloween has become such a popular time of the year to decorate too for trick-or-treaters and truck-or-treaters, and so we thought eventually we can do an interactive map for that time of the year too.
00:12:35.615 --> 00:13:27.504
But for Christmas time we were excited because it's something that my family truly loves is decorating for the holidays, and we love going and seeing everybody's displays, and so we create an interactive map that individuals who decorate their home and want to be added to the map they post on our Facebook page Camper Holidays and in turn we take those addresses and we turn it into an interactive map that they can actually click where they're starting, pick one house and then it will take you all the way around Kings County with everyone who has submitted their address, their address, and we also, on the individual posts, will have each house highlighting whatever it is that they are offering.
00:13:27.504 --> 00:13:38.068
There's people out there that have snow machines and some have the Grinch Mr Penguin I think he ended last year, but he was a fun one for the public.
00:13:38.068 --> 00:13:49.224
So it's nice to have a venue for individuals to just have the one stop and then know where to go from there, instead of just randomly having to drive around.
00:13:49.946 --> 00:14:02.937
Yeah, so the focus of your program, then, is just being a resource for people to be able to get these lists, to go around and look at the houses, and I remember that when I did this a few years back, the city of Hanford fire truck would go around town and visit all the houses.
00:14:02.937 --> 00:14:05.504
So yours remember that when I did this a few years back the city of Hanford fire truck would go around town and visit all the houses.
00:14:05.504 --> 00:14:09.999
So yours seems to be aimed mainly at just a resource for people to find these homes.
00:14:10.038 --> 00:14:19.261
Yes, and initially, when we started the Facebook page, we thought we would maybe entertain the idea of having it as a competition.
00:14:19.261 --> 00:14:29.865
But a lot of the feedback I got was more of they would love for people just to visit, because that's what they enjoy doing is decorating.
00:14:29.865 --> 00:14:42.562
They didn't want to be entered into a contest and so I thought well, I don't know how to do part contest, part, not so majority rule, and we are strictly just a resource.
00:14:42.562 --> 00:14:54.196
Like you said, the map is a wonderful way that makes it so easy for families, freddy, the fire truck and limousine services that do the holiday lights.
00:14:54.196 --> 00:14:58.765
They love the interactive map because it's just one shot.
00:14:58.765 --> 00:15:04.426
They put their starting point, pick the house closest to them and then it takes them the rest of the way.
00:15:05.674 --> 00:15:09.787
So what is the timeline that you have for entries and putting these lists out?
00:15:10.495 --> 00:15:14.826
This year we have already started accepting submissions.
00:15:14.826 --> 00:15:21.022
So at the end of each day I start taking a look at the posts and building the map from there.
00:15:21.022 --> 00:15:27.708
I think the last day for the mission to be entered and added to the interactive map.
00:15:27.708 --> 00:15:29.770
I think I wrote the 20th.
00:15:29.770 --> 00:15:36.546
Don't hold me to that, but you can find that on Hanford Holiday's Facebook page.
00:15:37.677 --> 00:15:39.995
Well, candice mentioned it there, it's Hanford Holiday on Facebook.
00:15:39.995 --> 00:15:48.500
Well, candice mentioned it there, it's Hanford Holiday on Facebook and we encourage you to go to that Facebook page and find the driving maps and a list of the decorated homes in Hanford.
00:15:48.500 --> 00:15:50.182
Candice, thank you so much for joining us.
00:15:50.981 --> 00:15:51.522
Thank you.
00:15:52.163 --> 00:15:52.722
Merry Christmas.
00:15:54.977 --> 00:15:55.703
Merry Christmas to all of you.
00:15:56.686 --> 00:16:06.149
This year, local realtors Leandra Dupree and Stephanie Silverik-Chavez are adding to our list of choices for looking at Christmas lights With a website and social media pages.
00:16:06.149 --> 00:16:08.033
Kings County Let it Glow.
00:16:08.033 --> 00:16:09.676
Leandra joins me now.
00:16:09.676 --> 00:16:11.058
How are you doing, leandra?
00:16:12.407 --> 00:16:13.009
I'm doing great.
00:16:13.009 --> 00:16:13.431
How are you?
00:16:13.845 --> 00:16:14.527
I'm awesome.
00:16:14.527 --> 00:16:19.038
Hey, can you tell us a little bit about Kings County Let it Glow and why you decided to start it?
00:16:20.027 --> 00:16:28.048
We decided to start it so that we'd give something for the community to do during the holidays and make it fun with a little bit of competition.
00:16:28.048 --> 00:16:31.039
So we decided to do five different categories.
00:16:31.039 --> 00:16:35.774
You can do a self-submission for your own address or you could enter in somebody else's address.
00:16:35.774 --> 00:16:49.341
If you do enter in somebody else's address, we will stop by and we will drop them off a sign and a letter asking them permission to have a sign in their yard and be able to put them on our interactive map that will show you where all the houses are located in Kings County.
00:16:50.264 --> 00:16:50.625
That's great.
00:16:50.625 --> 00:16:52.533
I understand you have some sponsors for the program.
00:16:53.384 --> 00:16:54.046
Yes, we do.
00:16:54.046 --> 00:17:04.421
We have Core Home Loans, maceo Mortgage A1, plumbing Quality Cleaners, gold Standard Mortgage and Valley Home Inspections.
00:17:04.964 --> 00:17:05.507
Yeah, that's great.
00:17:05.507 --> 00:17:06.790
Those are listed on your website.
00:17:06.790 --> 00:17:07.714
I saw that earlier.
00:17:07.714 --> 00:17:11.255
So tell us a little bit about the awards and categories.
00:17:11.255 --> 00:17:14.615
I understand you have some creative categories you're going to be judging homes on.
00:17:15.145 --> 00:17:32.593
Yeah, so that way we can have at least five winners, just to give them a little extra incentive, a little more extra, you know, a little extra incentive, um, especially because I don't think people realize how much work a lot of these people put into doing their yards and getting their houses ready for us to all enjoy and they get the bill and all the fun stuff.
00:17:32.593 --> 00:17:38.501
So I thought we thought it'd be kind of cool to give them like an actual reward and, um, a hundred dollar gift card.
00:17:38.501 --> 00:17:41.152
Five different homes will win from five different categories.
00:17:41.152 --> 00:17:45.856
They will win a $100 gift card to Amazon and then they will get a trophy for their category.
00:17:45.856 --> 00:17:51.592
We just had them ordered and they're ginormous three-foot lights and they'll have their name and year that they had won.
00:17:52.204 --> 00:18:01.412
Nominations actually opened up yesterday, so we're taking nominations from yesterday and they will actually end December 14th.
00:18:01.412 --> 00:18:09.440
Voting will begin December 15th and then the voting will end right at midnight on the 24th.
00:18:09.440 --> 00:18:14.096
We will actually make the announcement of who won each category on December 24th at noon.
00:18:14.096 --> 00:18:16.021
So we have five categories.
00:18:16.021 --> 00:18:22.698
Our categories are minimalist a simple, clean white light or just a simple clean display.
00:18:22.698 --> 00:18:26.835
Number two is going to be inflatables for the best inflatable display.
00:18:26.835 --> 00:18:31.977
Then our third category is the reason for this season best nativity display.
00:18:31.977 --> 00:18:37.457
And then we have our four Griswolds sparing no expense, some that just goes all out.
00:18:37.457 --> 00:18:42.356
And then we have Disco Fever for the best projection of lights, with music.
00:18:43.786 --> 00:18:45.291
Those are some creative categories.
00:18:45.813 --> 00:18:47.832
Yeah, we thought we'd have a little bit of fun with it.
00:18:48.545 --> 00:18:49.990
Where can we find King's County?
00:18:49.990 --> 00:18:51.955
Let it Glow on the internet.
00:18:52.786 --> 00:18:54.594
They can find it on Facebook.
00:18:54.594 --> 00:19:00.330
There is a Facebook group called King's County Let it Glow and there's a ton of information on there.
00:19:00.330 --> 00:19:15.192
They can also look at my Facebook, my business partner, stephanie Silvera Chavez's Facebook, or Beja Fellini she's another one of our agents that's participating in this or Tiffany McAllister or Kristen Fullard so all these people kind of have a big following.
00:19:15.192 --> 00:19:36.976
So any of them you can find any of these links to any of this through any of our agents on our team's websites, or they can go to wwwkingscountyletitglowcom and that's where they can register their homes or register another participant and it'll ask them if it's their home or they're going to be registering someone else, just in case someone doesn't want their house.
00:19:36.976 --> 00:19:43.413
You know, yep, been there, been there, done that Right, just want to make sure we have the disclaimers out there, yeah.
00:19:43.944 --> 00:19:47.576
Hey, Leander, thank you for joining us and taking time out of your busy schedule.
00:19:47.576 --> 00:19:51.471
I know it's a busy time of the year for realtors and I want to thank you for joining us.
00:19:51.471 --> 00:19:53.289
And good luck to Kings County.
00:19:53.289 --> 00:19:53.852
Let it glow.
00:19:54.413 --> 00:19:54.924
Absolutely Well.
00:19:54.924 --> 00:19:55.930
Thank you so much for this opportunity.
00:20:06.704 --> 00:20:07.185
We greatly appreciate it.
00:20:07.185 --> 00:20:11.577
And now it's time for your Hanford Insider Sports report with Eric Bentley.
00:20:11.577 --> 00:20:22.993
We'll start with youth sports, where Hanford Youth Baseball has announced that their signups for the upcoming spring season are starting.
00:20:22.993 --> 00:20:29.698
Registration closes at the end of this month, so go to hanfordyouthbaseballcom for more information.
00:20:31.165 --> 00:20:34.496
In high school sports, it was a pretty light week due to the holiday break.
00:20:34.496 --> 00:20:36.993
However, there were a few teams in action.
00:20:36.993 --> 00:20:42.650
We'll start with the Turkey Leg Showdown Girls Basketball Showcase hosted by Sierra Pacific.
00:20:42.650 --> 00:20:54.019
The tournament featured all three Hanford teams, where the host Golden Bears went 1-1, picking up a 65-59 victory over Buchanan and falling to Benacci 48-39.
00:20:54.019 --> 00:21:03.913
Hanford West wasn't able to come away with a victory in their two games versus Buchanan and Orcutt Academy, and Hanford High fell in their lone matchup to Mendota.
00:21:03.913 --> 00:21:10.773
There was also one soccer game, as the Sierra Pacific boys lost to Granite Hills by a final of 3-0.
00:21:10.773 --> 00:21:18.487
All of the local teams will jump back into action next week and I'll be back to have a breakdown of all of the results on next week's show.
00:21:18.487 --> 00:21:29.028
